Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo (Bunkyo, Tokyo) will launch "Tokyo Unkai: Yakumo," a significantly evolved version of its signature Japanese garden mist experience, from July 1, 2026.
A Natural Phenomenon Recreated in Central Tokyo
Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has been pursuing a "Garden Project" — an initiative to continuously enhance the cultural and experiential value of its historic Japanese garden. The grounds have been celebrated as a scenic landmark since the Nanbokucho period and were formally landscaped in the Meiji era by statesman Aritomo Yamagata. For over 140 years, this nature-rich garden has been carefully preserved and passed down.
In 2020, this commitment gave rise to "Tokyo Unkai" — a large-scale mist installation that recreates a sea of clouds, a natural phenomenon normally seen only in mountainous areas when temperature, wind, and humidity align in just the right way. Visitors who look down over the garden see trees rising from the mist like islands, while those who step into the garden find themselves enveloped in an otherworldly atmosphere that shifts completely between morning, afternoon, and night.
This "Garden Culture Revival and Transmission Model" earned the 2025 Good Design Award, recognized for redefining the garden not merely as scenery but as a platform for experience, research, and human development — simultaneously preserving and generating cultural value.
Now, in 2026, Tokyo Unkai enters its second phase.
Layered Clouds and Three-Dimensional Expression
"Yakumo" (八雲) translates as "eight (or many) layered clouds." In this evolved display, mist spray volume, release angle, and timing are precisely controlled to move beyond a single uniform cloud layer and create overlapping, three-dimensional cloud formations.
- Additional mist nozzles expand the cloud sea generation area
- Finer control creates a different landscape each hour
- The range of cloud sea visible from guest rooms is extended
Combined with natural variables — wind, light, humidity, and temperature — every visit offers a uniquely different scene, making the garden a genuinely "living" landscape.
From 6:00 PM, an evolved illumination display comes alive. Around 1,000 lights synchronize with soundscapes to express the garden's breathing and vitality, merging with the layered cloud sea to create a dramatically atmospheric space.
Seasonal garden presentations — including summer bamboo lanterns, an Unkai Splash experience, and a wind-chime pathway — layer onto the cloud sea display, ensuring the garden shows a different face depending on when you visit.
Throughout the hotel, limited-time food and drink menus themed around Yakumo are offered, allowing visitors to enjoy the world of "Tokyo Unkai: Yakumo" through taste as well as sight.
