Hotel Vischio Toyama Lobby Showcases Mini Andon Lanterns from the Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Festival

Hotel Vischio Toyama, located in Meiwa-cho, Toyama City, is hosting a lobby display of miniature andon lanterns from May 7 (Thu) to June 6 (Sat), 2026. The miniature pieces are modeled after the spectacular lanterns used in the Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Festival, a traditional event held each year in Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture.

About the Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Festival

The Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Festival takes place every year on the first Friday and Saturday of June in Tsuzawa, Oyabe City. It is a bold and spirited traditional event in which enormous andon lanterns — roughly 6 meters tall and 11 meters long — are paraded through the streets before being crashed into one another in an effort to destroy the opponent's suspended decorations.

Those suspended decorations, known as tsurimono, are intricate three-dimensional sculptures crafted from bamboo frames shaped into dragons, butterflies, peonies, and other designs. They are covered in Japanese washi paper and painted in vivid reds, yellows, and dark blues. When illuminated at night, the lanterns take on an especially dreamlike quality.

The hotel lobby display features mini andon lanterns at approximately one-tenth the scale of the full-sized festival pieces. It offers visitors a chance to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship up close ahead of the actual festival.

This year's Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Festival is scheduled for June 5 (Fri) and June 6 (Sat) in the Tsuzawa district of Oyabe City. The lantern procession begins at 7:00 PM, with the dramatic collision of the giant lanterns starting at 9:00 PM.
