Kamakura Prince Hotel (1-2-18 Shichirigahama Higashi, Kamakura, Kanagawa) will hold a wagashi-making experience as a program for enjoying a winter stay in Kamakura more fully. The experience is led by the Kamakura-based creative wagashi shop "Kamakura Sosaku Wagashi Temari".
The program offers a quiet morning moment to spend with oneself. Where Western sweets center on the pleasure of eating, nerikiri is a confection that lets the maker savor the time of making itself. Shaping the form, layering colors, and expressing the season become a small creative activity in the palm of the hand.
Nerikiri, with delicate designs that evoke the beauty of the four seasons, is known for its gentle melt-in-the-mouth texture and refined sweetness. Participants can enjoy the delicate flavors of ingredients such as white bean paste (shiro-an) and gyuhi (soft rice cake), along with Japan's distinctive seasons, with all five senses. The program makes use of the time before checkout and can add depth to the memories of a trip. During the event period, seasonal motifs such as "Temari" (decorative ball), "Hitsuji" (sheep), and "Yuki-usagi" (snow rabbit) are prepared, so each visit offers a new piece to make.
In the experience, participants make three pieces of nerikiri in the day's theme, one type per session. The freshly made nerikiri is served with matcha from Kyoto's Fukujuen (福寿園). A box for taking the sweets home is also provided, so the memory of the Kamakura trip lingers after returning home. The program invites participants to bring a winter scene to bloom in the palm of the hand and to feel the beauty of the season and the depth of Japanese culture.
