Kobe no Tobira Launches Three New Experience Programs Celebrating Kobe's Old Town and Food Culture

Kobe no Tobira (神戸のとびら) is a destination-based travel platform run by the Kobe Tourism Bureau. Three new hands-on programs have just gone on sale, using neighborhood walks and exchanges with local makers to let visitors get a close-up feel for everyday life in Kobe and the city's food culture.

A Warm Walk Through Kobe's Old Town: The Minatogawa-Shinkaichi Market Food Tour

  • Date: Monday, September 14, 2026
  • Capacity: 18 people, first-come, first-served
  • Price: ¥7,300

Minatogawa-Shinkaichi was once known as the "Asakusa of the West" and bustled with movie theaters and playhouses, and its market still keeps that lively energy today. On this walking tour, two guides who love the neighborhood, Atsuko Maehata and Yoko Nishijima, lead visitors through its shopping streets and to shops loved by locals, with a stop at a craft beer specialty shop to sample three kinds of beer. At Marushin Market, participants play a "shopping game," picking out side dishes, fish, fruit, and other ingredients within a set budget. Once the game is over, everyone shares what they've bought and enjoys lunch together.

Bread-Making Experience at Isuzu Bakery, a Kobe Local Favorite

  • Dates: Wednesday, September 9 and Wednesday, September 16, 2026
  • Capacity: 10 people per day, by lottery
  • Price: ¥5,800

This program takes place at the head office factory of Isuzu Bakery, one of Kobe's best-known bakeries, where participants make bread alongside company president Daisuke Izutsu. On the day, guests try their hand at scoring baguettes and shaping cream buns and red bean buns. While waiting for the bread to bake, Izutsu shares stories about the bakery's history and its commitment to quality, including how it makes use of unsold bread, and takes participants on a tour of the factory. The program also includes tasting freshly baked baguettes, comparing different types of shokupan, and sampling the following month's new bread.

  • Date: Thursday, September 24, 2026
  • Capacity: 12 people, by lottery
  • Price: ¥6,600

This program teaches two familiar styles of doughnut: one with a new "extra-chewy" texture, and a light, airy French cruller. The instructor is chef 越川良樹, known as the "flour wizard." He shares tips on ingredient ratios and shaping neat doughnuts, introducing recipes simplified with everyday ingredients and steps so they're easy to recreate at home. Participants also get to hear about his approach to ingredients and technique over tea, served alongside doughnuts made fresh by the chef, and can take home the doughnuts they make as a souvenir.
