Fifteen years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Recovery Lantern Project is set to mark its 8th year in Koriyama, Fukushima. On March 11, 2026, the plaza in front of JR Koriyama Station's West Exit will be illuminated by approximately 350 lanterns crafted from Ebine Traditional Handmade Japanese Paper (海老根伝統手漉和紙), a craft designated as a traditional handicraft of Fukushima Prefecture.
The project was launched by Koriyama Women's University Junior College in collaboration with local organizations, with the aims of preserving the memory of the disaster for future generations, fostering connections among community members, and contributing to the revitalization of the local area. The lanterns on display were created by residents of reconstruction public housing as well as elementary, middle, and high school students from across the city, through dedicated workshops and after-school club activities.
An opening ceremony will take place at 5:00 PM, accompanied by a musical performance by students from the Early Childhood Education Department of Koriyama Women's University Junior College.

In addition, the Fukushima Prefecture Kenchu Regional Promotion Bureau will simultaneously host a Candle Night event at the same venue. The event will feature a booth introducing the progress of reconstruction efforts, a booth showcasing food options prepared during disasters, and a mini candle-making experience — offering visitors a chance to deepen their understanding of disaster preparedness and local traditions.
