Lightec Inc. has manufactured and sold lighters and related products since its founding in 1937, building a reputation for safe, reliable, and high-quality craftsmanship. In recent years, as consumer interest has shifted from owning things to having experiences, the company has expanded into lifestyle products and services that enrich everyday life.

Environmental Consideration from Construction to Daily Operations
LOCAL BASE has incorporated environmental considerations from the construction stage onward. The building uses a steel-frame structure to reduce CO2 emissions per unit of floor area during construction, along with a system that collects rainwater for reuse in flower beds.
Some areas of the property use flooring recycled from painted construction scaffolding boards, and an elevated, well-ventilated construction style was adopted to reduce concrete use and help protect the wood from damage. Construction waste was kept to a minimum, and leftover cedar was repurposed into furniture used throughout the property.
Thought has also gone into the products and amenities offered at the property, including menu items free of animal-derived ingredients and amenities chosen for their lower environmental impact.
The hotel also promotes local production for local consumption, including a circular farming initiative at its own farm that uses manure from Miyako horses. Materials sourced from Miyakojima are used wherever possible, and coffee grounds from the property's in-house roastery, HASABA COFFEE, are reused as insect repellent and fertilizer, reflecting an effort to keep resources circulating within the property's operations.
The Background Behind Lightec's Work in Miyakojima
Miyakojima is a small island in Okinawa surrounded by beautiful seas. However, the island faces a serious environmental problem, as large amounts of marine debris wash ashore each year, with discarded plastic being a particularly significant concern.
Lightec has long manufactured and sold disposable lighters made largely of plastic. Because these products are designed to be used once and discarded, the resulting waste, and the cycle of introducing new products to replace them, has become a challenge for the market.
