Fairfield by Marriott Gifu Mino is hosting a special Mino washi paper crafting experience event on March 22, 2026, in collaboration with Ishikawa Shigyo Co., Ltd. This exclusive event is available only to guests staying at the hotel on March 21, 2026.
The Fairfield by Marriott Michi-no-Eki Project operates 29 accommodation-focused hotels across Japan, promoting a travel style centered on exploring the hidden charms of local regions. With the concept "Quest Unknown Japan," the project aims to help visitors discover unique regional experiences and lesser-known attractions throughout the country. This event was designed to showcase the distinctive appeal of Mino City, Gifu Prefecture.
UNESCO-Recognized Papermaking Tradition
Mino washi is the oldest existing Japanese paper, with a history spanning over 1,300 years in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture. Among various types, "Hon-Minoshi paper," handcrafted one sheet at a time by artisans using kozo (paper mulberry) fibers, represents the pinnacle of Japanese papermaking and was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014.
Founded in 1902, Ishikawa Shigyo has been creating Mino washi crafts with the philosophy "Presenting the richness of Japanese heart," emphasizing traditional craftsmanship. At this event, participants will experience hands-on craft making in a 270-year-old historic building located within the "Udatsu-no-Agaru Machinami" (townscape with raised roof parapets), a designated preservation district for groups of traditional buildings. Guests can choose from three craft options—okiagari dolls, pen holders, or washi plates—and create their own unique Mino washi item under the guidance of Ishikawa Shigyo staff. Beyond the crafting experience, participants will also learn about Ishikawa Shigyo's history and its significant contributions to Mino City's development, gaining deeper insights into the region's rich cultural heritage. Every participant will receive a complimentary Mino washi craft as a souvenir. Experience heartwarming handcraft work in this historic space.
