About Van Gogh's Irises

Irises is an oil painting that Van Gogh made in May 1889, shortly after entering a sanatorium in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France. It depicts irises blooming in the hospital garden. Van Gogh himself considered the painting a study.

The vivid spread of color and the composition, in which the flowers are cropped as if spilling out of the frame, are thought to show the influence of the decorative patterns of Japanese woodblock prints. Van Gogh is also known for having collected ukiyo-e.

In September of the same year, his younger brother Theo exhibited the painting at the Indépendants exhibition in Paris. In 1987, it was sold for the highest price ever paid for a painting at that time, and it has been in the Getty Museum's collection since 1990.
