A New Osaka Souvenir Has Arrived — Nagasakido's Castella Biscuit Blends Japanese and Western Sweets

A new confectionery called the "Castella Biscuit" has arrived from Nagasakido, a long-established wagashi and Western sweets shop based in Osaka's Shinsaibashi. The treat brings together two beloved textures in one: the soft, moist quality of castella and the light, crispy bite of a biscuit.

Castella Biscuit product lineup

The Castella Biscuit is designed to deliver contrasting sensations in a single mouthful. A gentle sweetness appears on the first bite, and as you chew, a deeper richness and satisfying texture change unfold — a balance that makes it suitable both as a personal treat and as a gift.

Overcoming the Challenge of Two Contrasting Textures

Creating something simultaneously moist and crispy has long been considered difficult in confectionery. Nagasakido worked through repeated rounds of testing, fine-tuning both the baking temperature and ingredient ratios to find a method that preserves the moisture content of castella without sacrificing the airy lightness of biscuit. The result is a delicate balance where neither quality overwhelms the other.
