In November 2025, Hoshino Resorts celebrated 20 years of operations in Aomori Prefecture. To commemorate this milestone, three properties—Aomoriya, Oirase Keiryu Hotel, and Kai Tsugaru—are presenting special programs under the theme "A Journey Full of Love for Aomori!" These experiences are designed to showcase the deep connection between the resorts and the region.

Three Reasons Why Moss Flower Viewing is a Perfect Spring Experience

Reason 1: A Unique Oirase Stream Experience Unlike Any Other

For those who feel their usual cherry blossom viewing has become routine or are seeking a new spring discovery, this program offers something completely different. While cherry blossoms are admired from below, moss flowers require a magnifying glass to explore their miniature landscapes. This experience is filled with discovery and intellectual curiosity, providing a fresh perspective on spring.

Reason 2: Extended Viewing Season—10 Times Longer Than Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossom season typically lasts only about one week. In contrast, the Oirase Stream area is home to over 300 species of moss, with various moss flowers blooming over approximately two and a half months. This extended viewing period means visitors rarely miss the peak season, making it an ideal destination for travel planning.

Reason 3: Peaceful Nature Experience Away from Crowds

Traditional cherry blossom viewing often involves crowds, noise, and competition for viewing spots, making true relaxation difficult. The "Moss Flower Walk" offers a serene experience in the pristine natural environment, where the stream concierge guides guests to the best moss viewing locations. Visitors can enjoy the luxury of quietly observing moss flowers without the hustle and bustle.

Three Steps to Fully Enjoy Moss Flowers

STEP 1: Learn About Moss Flower Biology with Giant 50x Scale Models—"Moss Flower Discovery"

Approximately 50x scale moss flower model

Real moss flowers measure only about 3 cm, making their intricate structures difficult to observe without a magnifying glass. The "Moss Flower Discovery" session features moss flower models measuring approximately 150 cm—about 50 times the actual size. Stream concierges use these models to explain the fascinating structures and biology of moss flowers in an easy-to-understand way. This intellectually stimulating presentation inspires participants to search for moss flowers themselves, enhancing their enjoyment of the subsequent moss walk.

STEP 2: Observe Various Moss Flower Forms on the "Moss Flower Walk"

Sporophyte appearance

Stream concierges who are experts on Oirase Stream mosses guide participants to locations where moss flowers can be observed. The shapes of moss flowers vary greatly by species—from the golden short-haired "Karafuto-Kinmo-goke" to the round, adorable "Tama-goke." While the overall moss flower viewing season lasts about two and a half months, individual species can be extremely fragile, and their brief peak moments can only be witnessed at specific times. Participants can carefully observe the beautiful moss flowers blooming during their visit using magnifying glasses, appreciating their delicate charm.

Traditional cherry blossom viewing often includes "dumplings" (sweets) as an essential element. Oirase Keiryu Hotel presents "Moss Flower Sweets"—limited to 6 servings per day—featuring the unique designs of moss flowers (sporophytes). These sweets are modeled after three moss species with particularly distinctive appearances, offering a culinary experience unique to Oirase Keiryu Hotel. Through these sweets, guests can deepen their understanding of moss ecosystems while satisfying their intellectual curiosity.

Featured Sweets:

  • Kotsubo-goke: Represented by refreshing apple and mint-flavored chips, inspired by this moss species whose sporophytes point upward like blooming flowers.

  • Tamagoke: A pate de fruit recreating the adorable spherical sporophytes of Tamagoke moss, offering sweet apple flavors along with charming visual appeal.

  • Jagoke: Dried fruit and chocolate dessert inspired by the umbrella-shaped sporophytes of Jagoke moss that transform over time.
