Oirase Keiryu Hotel by Hoshino Resorts Launches Upgraded "Oirase Moss Journey" Plan for Its 20th Anniversary

Moss Suite Room living room

Starting April 10, 2026, the Oirase Keiryu Hotel by Hoshino Resorts — the only resort hotel situated along the Oirase Stream — will launch an upgraded version of its "Oirase Moss Journey" accommodation plan to mark 20 years of operation. The plan allows guests to stay in the "Moss Suite Room," which now features a newly added in-room hot spring with a moss art wall. The full stay is filled with moss-inspired experiences, from a welcome sweet called the "Moss Parfait" to a "Moss Morning" breakfast enjoyed with a magnifying loupe. During the same period, all guests will receive a "Moss Journal" and can collect stamps to try a "Moss Capsule Toy" vending machine as part of the 20th anniversary campaign.

Hoshino Resorts' 20th Anniversary in Aomori

In November 2025, Hoshino Resorts marked 20 years of operations in Aomori Prefecture. The Oirase Keiryu Hotel has long drawn attention to the small mosses that form the foundation of the Oirase Stream ecosystem, introducing guests to the wonders of nature through over 40 moss-related products and programs in the past two decades. For the 20th anniversary year of 2026, the hotel has crafted a stay that lets guests enjoy moss to the fullest.

Feature 1: A Unique Bathing Experience Surrounded by a Wall of Moss [Power Up]

In-room hot spring with moss view

The "Moss Suite Room," designed to let guests enjoy the texture and colors of moss right in their room, has been upgraded for the 20th anniversary. From April 2026, the in-room hot spring will feature a newly installed "Moss Art Wall" using real moss. Soaking in the tub, guests can feel as though they have stepped inside a moss forest — an immersive experience made possible by the delicate moss art that fills the view. Guests can enjoy a soak at any time, for as long as they like.

Feature 2: A Welcome Sweet to Start the Moss World from the Moment of Arrival — "Oirase Moss Parfait"

Welcome sweet

The popular "Oirase Moss Parfait" returns this year as a welcome sweet for Moss Suite Room guests. The dessert uses matcha ice cream and crumble to express the texture of "Jagoke," a type of liverwort found along the Oirase Stream. When served, smoke inspired by the cold sea fog known as "Yamase"(*1) drifts across the parfait. Guests can enjoy this teatime experience — taking in the look and aroma of the parfait — in the privacy of their moss-wrapped room.

Feature 3: A Special Breakfast for Moss Lovers — "Moss Morning"

Moss Morning breakfast

Breakfast is served in the room as the plan-exclusive "Moss Morning." The main dish, a "Smørrebrød"(*2), uses ingredients such as avocado and arugula to recreate the iconic Oirase Stream landscape of moss clinging to rocks. A magnifying loupe is provided alongside the meal, allowing guests to lean in and inspect the dish as though observing real moss. In addition to the taste, the breakfast is also designed to be enjoyed for its moss-like appearance.

Menu example: Smørrebrød, basil soup, quiche, yogurt, moss ball sweets, and a drink.

Other Moss-Related Programs

Seasonal Appeal of Oirase Stream Moss

The mosses of Oirase Stream change their appearance with the seasons. From the sporophytes of spring to the lush green moss balls of summer, the hotel offers deep dives into the moss world across all four seasons.

[20th Anniversary] "Moss Journal" and "Moss Capsule Toy" for All Guests

Moss Capsule Toy

All guests staying during the campaign period will receive a "Moss Journal," which chronicles the hotel's history of moss-related content over the past 20 years. By exploring the hotel and the stream with the journal in hand and participating in designated activities, guests earn stamps. Collecting three stamps earns a spin of the "Moss Capsule Toy," which contains one of 20 types of moss-themed prizes to take home as a souvenir.

[Spring] Spring Moss Viewing

In spring, a stroll along the stream reveals tiny signs of life that haiku poets have long called "the flower of moss." The seasonal "Spring Moss Viewing" program offers a chance to learn about moss ecology, observe it in the forest, and then savor a delicate sweet inspired by it.

[Summer] Oirase Moss Ball Shaved Ice

This summer sweet lets guests taste the scenery of Oirase Stream. Shaved ice shaped like a moss ball is served with condiments that represent how natural moss balls form — letting guests enjoy both the flavor and the natural history of moss.

[Year-Round] Moss Walk

Rather than walking the roughly 1 km mid-section of the Oirase Stream trail in the usual 30 minutes, guests join a stream concierge for a 2.5-hour leisurely walk. Using a spray bottle and magnifying loupe to peer into the micro world of moss, and guided by concierge expertise on moss structure, ecology, and the connection between moss and forest, the activity is one that keeps participants so captivated they find it hard to move on.

[Year-Round] Moss Ball Making Workshop

The "Moss Ball Making" workshop held inside the hotel uses moss, ferns, maple, beech, and other plants seen along the Oirase Stream to recreate the moss-covered rocks scattered throughout the gorge. The finished moss ball can be taken home, so the connection to moss continues even after the trip. (All plant materials used are sourced from horticultural suppliers.)

[Year-Round] Giant "Moss Art Wall" Made with Real Moss

A highlight of the Keiryu-BASE area is a massive "Moss Art Wall" — approximately 8.5 m wide and 2 m tall — made from real moss. Seven species found in the Oirase Stream, including Leucobryum neilgherrense and Brotherella recurvans, are used. Visitors can touch the soft, fluffy texture of the real moss or use a loupe to explore the intricate design. Within the moss art wall lies a small, beautiful natural world waiting to be discovered.
