Fireworks light up the summer night sky, their beauty and thrill gone in an instant. Okamedo, a wagashi shop that has been making traditional Japanese sweets in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture for more than 70 years, wanted to capture that same fleeting beauty in a confection. From mid-July 2026, the shop is pre-selling its summer-only jonamagashi "Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu," which sold about 5,000 pieces last year, through its online shop, with limited quantities following at its directly operated stores across the Higashi-Mikawa region from August.
"Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu" was born during the pandemic, when fireworks festivals across the country were cancelled one after another and the shop's artisans wanted to bring a bit of summer joy through wagashi to people who couldn't watch fireworks that year.
Last year the confection sold about 5,000 pieces and drew a strong response on social media, with comments like "it's almost too pretty to eat," "it looks just like real fireworks," and "my kids loved it," making it one of Okamedo's signature summer products.

From Watching Fireworks to Tasting Them
Fireworks stay in people's hearts precisely because they disappear in an instant. Okamedo wanted to capture that fleeting, beautiful scene in a wagashi, and "Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu" was born from that wish.
Two layers form the confection: a deep indigo domyoji-kan, reminiscent of the night sky, topped with a translucent kingyoku-kan (a clear agar jelly), finished with gold and silver leaf applied by hand, piece by piece.
The kingyoku-kan changes expression as it catches the light, evoking the sparkle of fireworks blooming across the night sky — a piece that draws an audible "it's beautiful" the moment the box is opened.

Fireworks Bloom in the Mouth, Too
A springy kingyoku-kan. A chewy domyoji-kan. And a delicate texture that melts away at the end.
The interplay of textures recreates the sensation of a firework opening in the night sky, spreading wide, and quietly fading away, leaving its afterglow behind.
Thawed slowly in the refrigerator and served chilled, the confection's transparency and freshness come through even more, for a cool, refreshing taste suited to summer.

Six Summers Blooming in One Box
What Okamedo wants to deliver is more than a wagashi. A family gathered around the table. Children with eyes lit up saying "it's beautiful." Time spent with family who have come home for the holidays. A summer gift for someone special. Memories of a day spent at a fireworks festival.
The hope is that "Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu" becomes part of those summer memories, and with that hope, each box is prepared and sent out with care.

Beauty That Only Comes From an Artisan's Hands
"Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu" cannot be mass-produced. From pouring the kingyoku-kan and layering the colors to applying the gold and silver leaf, every step is finished by hand by the shop's artisans.
Because of that, production is limited, and this year's confection is once again sold in limited quantities.

Comment From President Takahiko Mori
"I believe wagashi are not simply something to fill the stomach, but something that connects Japan's four seasons, its culture, and the feelings between people.
'Uchiage Hanabi 6-Renpatsu' was born from our artisans' wish to bring a bit of summer joy through wagashi, at a time when fireworks festivals across the country were being cancelled one after another because of the pandemic.
Last year we sold about 5,000 pieces and received many warm comments, like 'it's too pretty to eat' and 'it let our family feel summer together.'
Fireworks disappear from the night sky within minutes, but the memories of spending that day with family or someone dear stay with us for a long time.
We hope this wagashi can become part of those summer memories, too.
Okamedo will keep carrying Japan's four seasons and regional culture into the future through wagashi, and keep taking on the challenge of making sweets that stay in people's hearts."
