Knife Brand Opinel Launches New "Sport Line" Series for Extreme Outdoor Environments

Opinel, the French knife brand with more than 130 years of history, has introduced a new "Sport Line" series built specifically for outdoor use. The lineup includes three models: the "néo7 ALPINE," designed for mountaineering and climbing; the "HORIZON No.08," suited to a wide range of situations from hiking to canoeing and cycling; and the "OCEAN No.09," built for sailing and other marine activities. All three are manufactured in France and combine Opinel's signature sharpness and portability with functions tailored to the demands of each field.

"néo7 ALPINE": Built for Mountaineering and Climbing

The "néo7 ALPINE" was developed for use in mountain settings such as mountaineering and climbing. It features an 8cm serrated blade and the innovative OPIFLEX® blade-retention mechanism, which allows smooth one-handed opening and closing to make cutting rope, tape, and similar materials easier. Weighing only about 41g, the knife also packs in a range of functions, including a scraper, bit holder, and whistle — a next-generation outdoor knife built for convenience and safety.

① The New OPIFLEX® Mechanism for Smooth Blade Opening and Closing

Rather than Opinel's traditional locking mechanism, the néo7 ALPINE uses the OPIFLEX® blade-retention mechanism, which lets the blade open and close smoothly and intuitively. The blade tip also stays slightly exposed from the handle even when folded, so it can be opened easily with one hand, even while wearing gloves.

② An 8cm Serrated Stainless Steel Blade

The knife uses an 8cm serrated stainless steel blade, making it easy to cut rope in mountaineering, climbing, and similar settings.

③ A Scraper Function for Mountain Fields

The thick, sturdy blade edge doubles as a mini scraper, letting users scrape away ice, mud, and dirt.

④ A Slot for Attaching a Driver Bit

When the blade is folded away, a standard-size driver bit can be attached to the slot in the ring, making it handy for simple gear maintenance and adjustments.

⑤ A Lanyard Hole for Easy Carrying

A lanyard hole at the center of the body lets users thread through a drop-prevention cord or lanyard. This makes it easy to attach to bags or gear, improving portability and helping prevent loss.

⑥ A 100dB Whistle for Emergencies

The handle includes a 100dB whistle that can be used to signal for help in the event of an emergency or getting lost, contributing to greater safety in mountain fields.

⑦ A Handle Designed for a Secure, Comfortable Grip

The handle, made of polypropylene reinforced with 30% glass fiber, incorporates a cork section. It stays secure in wet hands or while wearing gloves, maintaining comfortable operation even during extended use.

⑧ An Eyelet for Easier, Lighter Opening

An eyelet (opening) in the blade makes it easier to open and close while also helping to reduce the knife's overall weight.

The high-quality stainless steel blade offers excellent corrosion resistance, staying sharp over a long period without much maintenance. The black version features a special surface treatment (PVD coating) on the blade and ring for added corrosion resistance.

"OCEAN No.09": Designed for Sailing and Marine Activities

The "OCEAN No.09" was developed for use at sea, including sailing, boating, and fishing. In addition to a 9cm stainless blade suited to ropework, it includes a marlinspike and shackle key, bringing together the functions needed for marine work in a single tool. With a handle built for water and impact resistance, along with Opinel's proprietary locking mechanism, it's designed to combine the functionality and safety required on the water.

The handle is made of polyamide material with excellent water and impact resistance. It also performs well in extreme temperature conditions, making it reliable for use at sea and near the water.

③ A Built-In Marlinspike for Smooth Ropework

The handle houses a hardened steel marlinspike, allowing users to loosen or untie rope smoothly without cutting it. It can be stored inside the handle when not in use, adding to the knife's portability.

⑥ A Lanyard Hole for Added Portability

A lanyard hole at the end of the handle allows for attaching a drop-prevention cord or lanyard. This improves portability and helps prevent loss near the water.

⑦ Opinel's Signature Virobloc® Safety Lock
