The Kii-Jorohototogisu (キイジョウロウホトトギス), known as the "lady of the mountain village," has reached peak bloom at Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden (六甲高山植物園) on Mount Rokko.
About the Kii-Jorohototogisu
A relative of the hototogisu, the Kii-Jorohototogisu grows wild only in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture. It is a rare plant classified as Category II Endangered (絶滅危惧II類). Its yellow flowers bloom in clusters, and its appearance was likened to that of a Heian-period noblewoman known as a "jōrō" (上臈), which gave the plant its name. It is a popular autumn flower with many visitors, including photographers.

- Habitat: A perennial found on Honshu (southern Kii Peninsula), growing so that it hangs down from cliffs in the deep mountains
- Appearance: Stems 40 to 80 cm long droop down and bear overlapping flowers at the nodes
- Name: "Kii" comes from the fact that the plant grows wild only on the Kii Peninsula
Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden has about 200 Kii-Jorohototogisu plants. They are at peak bloom now and are expected to be enjoyable until around mid-October.
Monday Free Admission for Children
In keeping with the "cultural autumn" season, a "Monday Kids Free Campaign" is being held jointly with the ROKKO Forest Sound Museum (ROKKO森の音ミュージアム). To broaden opportunities for local children to experience culture and learn about nature, admission is free for children of elementary school age and younger on the following Mondays, which often fall on substitute holidays for school events.
- Dates: Mondays, October 5, 19, and 26, and November 2, 9, and 16
- Eligibility: Children of elementary school age and younger (single-facility tickets for either facility, or the combined ticket for both facilities)
- Notes: Group visits are excluded. Tickets that have already been purchased cannot be refunded.
