Saga Tamaya Celebrates 220th Anniversary with Ambitious Transformation into New Department Store, Hotel, and Hot Spring Complex

Saga Tamaya (headquarters: 2-5 Nakanokoji, Saga City, Saga Prefecture; President: Yuto Yamakoshi) will begin a large-scale update called the "Pre-Remodel" of its existing building starting March 2026, ahead of the planned opening of the new main building (a department store and hotel complex) scheduled for 2028-2029. Additionally, the hot spring drilling project—a rare undertaking—is starting at the former site.

Our role is not just to wait for the building to be completed, but to create evolution ourselves, starting today.

As department store revitalization becomes a nationwide challenge, Saga Tamaya is moving forward as a "testing ground to create the future of the city ahead of time."

The hot spring drilling project is beginning at the site planned for the new main building.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Saga Tamaya new main building hot spring drilling was held on January 7th (Wednesday). The hot spring water that flows will be used not only for future hotel functions but also in the department store space, aiming to create a "hub in the city center of Saga where people can enjoy hot spring culture."

Furthermore, during the construction period, the former site will not be "an empty space," but rather "a place where people gather and things start moving from now" through the installation of foot baths and large-scale events.

"Pre-Remodel" Major Update of Existing Building Starting March 2026

Launch of Saga Tamaya's Original Select Cosmetics Brand "SUMIHADA"

Saga Prefecture is developing a cosmetics initiative aiming to accumulate cosmetic industries related to beauty and health centered in Karatsu City and Genkai Town in northern Kyushu, and to become a supply area for cosmetics-related natural ingredients.

Saga Tamaya will launch its original select cosmetics brand 'SUMIHADA' on the first floor of the South Building, strengthening locally produced cosmetics in collaboration with Saga University and the prefecture.

A fragrance specialty shop will be opened, and experiential events such as yoga and beauty acupuncture will be held in collaboration with over 50 local influencers.

Launch of Made-in-Japan Men's Select Shop "HI-FRONT"

A dress-up lounge 'HI-FRONT' featuring Japanese-made masterpieces, centered on Japan select and made-to-order items, will newly open on the fifth floor of the South Building.

The shop will sell carefully selected items by buyers, focusing on comfortable to wear and use items and basic items that can be loved for a long time without being influenced by trends.

Renewal of Department Store Basement (South Building Basement) Starting April 2026

The theme is "live atmosphere and sizzle." The sales floor layout will be completely renewed, transforming into "a basement department store you want to drop by even without a specific purpose" with in-store processed sushi and prepared foods, and drink counters where you can taste on the spot.

A new grocery shop will be introduced, creating a food floor that adds color to daily life with an unprecedented product lineup.

Enhancement of Specialty and Expertise

[East Annex]

The "East Annex" along Chuo Street, which mainly sells food gifts and souvenirs, as well as monthly featured sweets, will be transformed into an alcoholic beverage corner aiming to be the best in the region. Furthermore, POP-UP events and corners will be enhanced, creating a sales floor with "something new every time you visit" to deliver excitement and enjoyment.

It will be edited as a "taste journey" space where you want to choose both for yourself and as gifts.

[South Building 1st and 2nd Floor Terrace]

Under the theme of "creating a place where people gather," new events and projects based on seasonal events and seasonal customs will be delivered.

In addition to introducing authentic brands, "department store-like" customer service such as personal diagnosis and order services will be pursued.

Saga Tamaya positions this initiative not as a simple renovation, but as "a demonstration of future department store creation." All sales floor reforms, events, and customer service carried out now will become solid feedback for refining the new main building concept, aiming to become a new model case for regional department stores.
