The Hontei Philosophy

UMITO Atami Hontei reimagines the traditional Japanese seaside villa culture of the Showa era, when literary masters, architects, and artists used these retreats as places for contemplation and creative rejuvenation. The property serves as a modern "main residence by the sea for quiet introspection."

Unlike the Taisho romanticism of UMITO Atami Bettei, UMITO Atami Hontei pursues a stripped-down, serene Showa modernism. Drawing inspiration from the substantial "estate feeling" that Showa-era masters sought, the design incorporates furniture that honors natural materials and their inherent forms, and lantern-like lighting that evokes the warm glow of Atami's historic gas lamps.

From guest room terraces, visitors can gaze out at the vast ocean, finding creative richness in quiet time spent "settling the mind and sharpening introspection" amid the silence and sound of waves.

UMITO Atami The Salon: Collaboration with LEON Magazine

The Salon concept

Through collaboration with the popular magazine LEON, THE SALON will be renamed UMITO Atami The Salon and transformed into a new space.

This villa facing the ocean will evolve into a sophisticated space that is substantial yet infused with Italian taste. Themed as "a hideaway for adults," the entire space will be woven with LEON's aesthetic sense and stylish playfulness.

Features include lighting design that plays with shadow, substantial material choices, art piece displays, and LEON-curated cocktail experiences, embodying modern "salon culture." Though newly built, it pursues the comfort of a long-beloved "private residence."

The fusion of UMITO's and LEON's worldviews creates a new vacation home experience.

UMITO's Vision for Atami's Future

UMITO operates small luxury hotels under the concept "a villa by the sea." The brand fuses the three-in-one value of "vacation home use, lodging, and investment," proposing a next-generation lifestyle.

As of February 2026, UMITO operates four locations across three areas nationwide: Onna Village in Okinawa, Kamakura in Kanagawa, and Atami in Shizuoka. Plans call for expansion to 15+ locations by 2029.

In the Atami area, UMITO Atami Bettei opened in August 2025. UMITO Atami The Cliff started its third sales phase in November, and development of UMITO Atami Riviera has also been announced, making Atami an increasingly vibrant area for UMITO.

UMITO aims for its new seaside culture to bring even greater value to Atami.
