Wagashi Day falls on June 16, and 7-Eleven Japan is marking the occasion with five wagashi built around the theme of "coolness." The lineup includes the newly launched Purumochi Mizumanjū, which begins rolling out to stores from June 9.
What Is Wagashi Day?
June 16 has been observed as Wagashi Day since 1979, when the National Wagashi Association designated the date to commemorate a tradition dating back to 848 AD. Emperor Ninmyō reportedly offered 16 confections and rice cakes at a shrine to pray for good health and the warding off of illness. Each year, the day is celebrated with events and campaigns centered on enjoying Japanese traditional sweets.
