The 1F café restaurant "Current" at Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima (Miyakojima City, Okinawa) will be serving a "Summer Asian Afternoon Tea" from June 1 (Monday) to August 31 (Monday), 2026.

This season's afternoon tea puts the spotlight on yam — a relative of mountain yam and ube — being researched and cultivated by Tokyo University of Agriculture. The savory selections apply Chinese culinary techniques to this subtropical ingredient, featuring dishes such as "Yam Noodle Zhajiang Mian with Aguu Pork" and "Daifuku Beef and Yam Glutinous Rice Shumai," the latter a collaboration with Miyakojima's rare local Daifuku Beef. The sweets course makes full use of colorful tropical fruits including mango and dragon fruit for a bright summer tea time.

Note: Tokyo University of Agriculture has been cultivating yam as a research focus at its Miyako Subtropical Farm since 2003. In 2020, a yam-inspired dish from the farm received the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Promotion Bureau Director General Award at the GAP Cooking Contest.
