U/M/A/A Inc. (Representative: Masakazu Hiroishi, hereinafter U/M/A/A) announces the release of "TB-02: The Ghost in the Shell" series on January 30, 2026, as a new addition to the "TechnoByobu" (Techno Folding Screen) collection that has been on sale since 2023.
"TechnoByobu" is a new generation art piece that reconstructs cutting-edge visuals as folding screens using foil craftsmanship with over 500 years of tradition. The works, vividly depicted on folding screens through the handwork of craftsmen, have garnered attention. The first edition, "TB-01: Electronic Fan Girl," featuring album artwork motifs from YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra), became a major topic of discussion.
The second installment, "TB-02: The Ghost in the Shell" series, is a new generation visual art where past and future intersect, featuring cybernetic visuals from "The Ghost in the Shell" on the physical medium of folding screens. "TB-02: The Ghost in the Shell" offers a total of four variations: TB-02-KP (Konpaku), featuring Motoko Kusanagi aboard a Fuchikoma from the manga's original chapter illustration, and TB-02-GT (Gitai), using visuals of Motoko Kusanagi with wires connected from the 1995 animated film, each expressed in two types of foil—Western gold foil and tin foil.
The series will be available for purchase at the "Ghost in the Shell Exhibition" venue at TOKYO NODE, opening in spring 2026 on January 30.

What is TechnoByobu? (https://technobyobu.jp/)
The "Techno" in TechnoByobu originates from the Greek word "téchnē," meaning "art, technique, skill." It is a philosophical concept that encompasses not only practical technology but also the intelligence and creativity inherent in craftsmanship, as well as the futuristic sensibility represented by electronic music (techno). Against this background, "techno" is the root word of modern "technology" while also embodying a multilayered meaning that fuses cultural and artistic creativity.
Based on this philosophy, TechnoByobu consists of three elements:
"Artwork" reflecting the future = Art
Japanese "Traditional Craft" infused with craftsmen's handwork = Skill
"Digital Certificate" guaranteeing authenticity through technology = Technology
Through the convergence of these elements, TechnoByobu has materialized as an art piece reflecting the multilayered nature of "techno." The series will continue to pursue further expressive possibilities.

About The Ghost in the Shell
"The Ghost in the Shell" is a science fiction manga created by manga artist Masamune Shirow, with serialization beginning in Kodansha's "Young Magazine Kaizokuban" in 1989. The story depicts Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg with superior abilities in cyber warfare and combat, ranked as "Major." Leading the offensive unit "Public Security Section 9," she confronts increasingly complex and heinous crimes. Through its realistic, detailed, and cyberpunk expression, the work explores philosophical themes and deeply examines the fusion of humans and technology, as well as personal identity.
Works developed across different media—theatrical animation, television animation, and games—each express unique stories and interpretations different from the original manga.
About Rekiseisha
Born in 1905, Rekiseisha developed foil-pressed paper using Western gold foil, a technique that was unprecedented at the time—a scientific technology. Western gold foil is made of brass and, like expensive genuine gold foil (foil using gold), is beautiful and resistant to discoloration over time, making it a groundbreaking invention. Rekiseisha's products are highly valued not only domestically but also globally, with the quality of various foil products produced through its manufacturing methods utilized at the Imperial Hotel, the Imperial Household Agency, Nishi Honganji Temple, and high-end fashion brands such as CHANEL and GUCCI.
