About the Saryo

The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike opened in autumn 1986 and is one of the final major works by renowned architect Murano Togo. Throughout the building, the diverse and distinctive techniques he refined over the course of his career are richly preserved.

Seasonal illumination at the Japanese garden (autumn)

The Saryo is a sukiya-zukuri structure featuring a tea room, enveloped in the quiet and natural atmosphere of northern Kyoto. With many irreplaceable design elements — including precious building materials and intricately crafted joinery by skilled artisans — the hotel has carefully tended to the space since opening.

Now nearing its 40th year, the interior textures and Japanese garden have evolved with the passage of time, taking on an even more refined and graceful character. The Saryo continues to embody Murano Togo's philosophy, in which the architect was known to reflect on the temporality of architecture in his designs.

Beyond BAR Saryo, the space is also available for seasonal afternoon tea and private dining by reservation. The hotel offers complimentary viewing for guests staying overnight, as well as concierge-led interior tours highlighting Murano Togo's design details. The Japanese garden is also illuminated seasonally throughout the year.
