The Charm of Murano Togo's Architectural Masterpiece "Saryō"
The sukiya-style "Saryō" built in the Japanese garden of The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike was designed by renowned architect Murano Togo in his late years. It is an architectural masterpiece that shows different expressions with each visit, inviting serendipity.
● What is Sukiya-Style Architecture?
Traditional architecture born against the background of the tea ceremony spirit continuing from Sen no Rikyū, emphasizing the texture of materials and harmony with nature.
● Historical Background
In the 1980s, innovation accelerated against the backdrop of economic prosperity. As urbanization progressed, high-quality spaces with tranquility and extraordinary experiences were sought after, and many tea rooms were constructed. "Saryō," which opened in autumn 1986 together with the hotel, is one of Murano Togo's final architectural works. It is said to be the culmination of Murano's techniques and aesthetics.
● "Iki" (Sophistication) of Craftsmanship in Every Detail
Throughout the building, you can feel the craftsmen's skills and Murano's aesthetic sense in the refined designs. The playful designs that utilize the natural texture of materials have become more flavorful with the passage of nearly 40 years.
● Light and Shadow Woven by Exterior Views and Windows
Soft light is brought in from lattice windows and yukimi shoji (snow-viewing sliding screens). The shadows of trees in the Japanese garden and reflections from the pond that appear indoors vary with the season, time, and weather, creating a truly once-in-a-lifetime spatial experience.

"Saryō" offers free morning viewing for hotel guests, allowing them to leisurely appreciate Murano Togo's design. (Free, irregular holidays)
Additionally, kaiseki cuisine from "Tsujitome," the Urasenke-affiliated catering specialist, and the hotel's Japanese kaiseki cuisine are available by reservation.
