A beer born inside a novel is now available to drink in the real world. "Time Slip Beer" goes on sale on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The beer first appeared in the novel Time Slip Beer: Black Ships Arrive, Beer Fights Back, written by craft beer writer and author Kanae Ruppara, and ORYZAE BREWING in Wakayama Prefecture has brewed it for real. Made with rice, koji, hops, and the brewery's resident yeast, with no barley or wheat at all, it is a wild ale.
From the Page to the Glass
Time Slip Beer: Black Ships Arrive, Beer Fights Back is the story of a brewer who time-slips into the Edo period, an era shaken by the arrival of the Black Ships. Together with a man who has given up on sake brewing, the brewer takes on the challenge of making "beer," which does not yet exist in this era.
Without brewing beer, they will be killed.
With no malt, hops, or yeast in the late Edo period, the story combines modern beer knowledge with sake-brewing techniques to create beer. It is a craft beer novel that blends history and brewing.
The beer completed in the story has now been brewed in the real world as well, under the name "Time Slip Beer." It brings a new kind of reading experience to life, one where the beer born in the story can actually be drunk.
Brewed as if in Edo: Rice, Koji, and Resident Yeast
"What if beer were brewed in Edo?" Brewed on that premise, Time Slip Beer uses no barley or wheat at all. The ingredients are rice, koji, hops, and the brewery's resident yeast. Brewed to draw out the most from the koji, the wild ale is reminiscent of Champagne and white wine.

A "Drinkable End Credits" Beer
The label carries a QR code that leads to the full text of the novel Time Slip Beer: Black Ships Arrive, Beer Fights Back. Readers can travel alongside the main characters and watch the beer come together, then taste the very beer they made in the real world after finishing the story.
Time Slip Beer is "drinkable end credits," a way to taste the ending of the story.
Another notable feature of the beer is that it tastes better the longer it ages. Its flavor keeps changing in the bottle, and it shows more of its potential the longer it rests.
That means there is no need to rush through the novel. Take your time. As you read on, the flavor of the beer deepens too.

About the Novel
Time Slip Beer: Black Ships Arrive, Beer Fights Back is a beer novel by Kanae Ruppara. The idea for the novel came when the author interviewed ORYZAE BREWING as a writer. The brewery makes beer under the theme "What if Japan's national isolation were still continuing today...?"
The novel took five years to plan and three years to write. Under the supervision of ORYZAE BREWING, which has brewing experience in both beer and sake, real brewing knowledge is woven into the story. Readers can enjoy the story while also learning about brewing beer and sake.
