In Matsudo, Chiba, a community placemaking initiative known as the Tokiwadaira SONO Project is exploring a new way of building a neighborhood — one where local residents themselves take the lead in shaping the town's future.
As part of the project, the Tokiwadaira Summer Night Garden will take over the area on August 29 (Saturday) and 30 (Sunday), 2026.
This year's edition collaborates with the Tokiwadaira Danchi Summer Festival Bon Odori, a dance festival that has been cherished locally for generations even as its format has changed over time. Together, the two events will light up the night from the plaza at Tokiwadaira Station, on the Keisei Matsudo Line, all the way to the festival grounds.
Each location along the route takes on its own character: a beer-garden-like buzz in front of Tokiwadaira Station, glowing lights along Keyaki-dori, a sense of belonging at Tane House — a "challenge shop" space where people can try out small ideas and casually connect with the local community — and a spirit of togetherness at Nozomi no Hiroba. What unfolds over the two days is meant as an experiment for the future: the people who gather, walk, dance, and run stalls each become a clue to what kind of scenery Tokiwadaira can create from here.
A cumulative total of 60 or more vendors will set up at the market across the two days, including bakeries and pastry shops, coffee stands, handmade goods sellers, and kitchen cars.
Visitors are invited to picture what Tokiwadaira's nights might look like in the future while spending a summer evening at the event.
