From May 20 to 22, 2026, the SKYTREE SHOP on the 5th floor of Tokyo Skytree will host "Matcha & Koji: A Soothing Cup Woven by Fermentation – Matcha & Koji Drink Tasting & Sales." The event offers visitors a chance to experience Japan's distinctive taste traditions and fermentation culture through specially crafted drinks.
The event showcases Japanese-style drinks made with "matcha" and "koji" — two traditional Japanese ingredients known for being gentle on the body. Matcha is finely ground green tea that has long been integral to the Japanese tea ceremony, celebrated worldwide for its rich aroma and deep umami flavor. Koji is a cornerstone of Japan's traditional fermentation culture, used in staples such as miso, soy sauce, and sake, and has been garnering growing interest both in Japan and abroad alongside the rise in health consciousness.
For this event, a special "matcha latte" combining these two ingredients will be available. Prepared without sugar, the drink draws on the gentle, mellow sweetness of koji's fermentation to bring out the natural umami of matcha, resulting in a soothing and well-rounded flavor.
The products on offer are also well-suited as souvenirs or gifts — a distinctly Japanese memento that visitors can pick up between sightseeing spots while getting a taste of Japan's food culture and the appeal of fermentation.
