Starting Saturday, October 31, 2026, a two-person exhibition by photographers Toyohiro Matsushima and Tatsuki Nakata (中田樹), titled "#FFFFFF, #000000," will be held at the art hotel BnA_WALL in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
The exhibition is a photography show that starts from the two clearly separated colors of white and black and turns its attention to the countless gradations that exist between them. Toyohiro Matsushima looks at the contradictions and uncertainty of people caught between ideals and reality, while Tatsuki Nakata uses scenes of cities and nature to shake existing perceptions. Through the shared language of monochrome, these two photographers with different approaches raise questions about giving things outlines and fixing their meanings.
Where Does the Outline Lie?
Between white and black, two clearly separated colors, there are countless gradations.
Every day, people try to understand themselves and the world in front of them by naming things, drawing boundaries, and defining things. In today's world, where everything is classified and easy answers and evaluations are demanded, people feel doubts about these values and yet live within them themselves.
Defining things is an act necessary for understanding the world. But by fixing something to a single meaning, there may be things that become harder to see.
Toyohiro Matsushima looks at the contradictions and uncertainty of people swinging between ideals and reality, and tries to accept what cannot be fully defined as it is. Tatsuki Nakata, on the other hand, captures the scenery of cities and nature from different angles, gradually breaking down the perception of things that have already been given names and meanings.
Acceptance of what cannot be fully defined, and the dismantling of what has been defined. The works of the two photographers, who start from different directions, are connected by a shared question about fixing things to a single meaning.
The venue, BnA_WALL, is a place that creates diverse ways for people to engage with artworks through the experience of staying inside art. People with different backgrounds and experiences come and go, and even when they encounter the same work, each person takes it in differently. Just as there are countless gradations between white and black, there is no single correct way of seeing things.
Through works born of the two photographers' different perspectives, the exhibition invites visitors to step back a little from the search for clear answers and look at what lies in between. Encountering the works may become an opportunity for each viewer to pose a small question to themselves in that moment.
