About HOME ECONOMICS EXPERIMENT
HOME ECONOMICS EXPERIMENT (abbreviated HEE) is an art unit that has drawn attention in Japan and abroad for its distinctive worldview and experimental approach since it began activities in 2020. The unit started during the COVID-19 period, when its members came to appreciate anew the importance and freedom of personal indoor spaces.
Its concept is to combine the ideas of home economics with experimental production methods and a sustainable perspective, proposing new possibilities for living spaces. The unit has turned its worldview into everyday products, such as one-of-a-kind items made by giving new value to waste materials and used furniture on the verge of being discarded through various kinds of processing, as well as bedding and cushions made with original fabrics.
HEE has held fairs and solo exhibitions at Daikanyama Tsutaya Books (代官山 蔦屋書店) and NADiff a/p/a/r/t in Ebisu, and has developed a collaboration line at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA. Its other work includes the album logo design for SixTONES, live staging and merchandise design for XG, and graphics for FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL. Moving freely across apparel, interiors and music culture, the unit has attracted considerable attention. This exhibition offers a chance to experience the unit's thinking and compositional process across an entire space.
Artist Profile

HOME ECONOMICS EXPERIMENT is a project that studies the interaction between people and their environment in human life, centered on domestic life, from both human and material perspectives. Drawing on the natural, social and human sciences, it aims to contribute to human welfare while improving the quality of life.
The unit is made up of a man and a woman, who began working in 2020 after spending time at home during the pandemic and realizing anew the importance and freedom of personal indoor spaces.
The unit also provides graphics in music and other cultural contexts, working through visual approaches as well as products. In its visual expression, it values leaving room for thought within an intuitive sense of touch, and it seeks to communicate in a way that responds to the place and context.

Exhibition Overview and Concept
This exhibition takes the form of an installation that explores the process by which people and things are shaped by the overlapping of various elements.
Elements such as typography, photographs, graphics, symbols and shapes are handled together with materials, forms and colors. Through acts such as "layering," "arranging," "taking apart" and "recombining," the exhibition experimentally examines and expresses the relationships between elements within the space.
Even objects with the same shape appear as different things depending on the information given to their surfaces, where they are placed and their relationship to their surroundings. By reconstructing the whole venue as a single environment, the exhibition brings out the fact that our lives and ways of thinking are also made up of combinations of countless elements we have encountered so far.
It is an opportunity to look again at the act of "composing," which is easily overlooked in daily life.

Statement by HOME ECONOMICS EXPERIMENT
People and things are not made up of a single element.
Experience, memory, environment, information, material, form, color, words.
Different elements accumulate, combine and enter into relationships, and a single form takes shape.
The same is true of both people and things.
Our ways of thinking and our lives are also composed of the various elements we have encountered so far.
In this exhibition, through various forms of expression such as objects, images and words, we explore the process by which elements combine to create a single form or space.
Typography, photographs, graphics, familiar scenes, symbols, shapes.
We handle these together with materials, forms and colors, and consider the relationships between elements through acts such as layering, arranging, taking apart and recombining.
Even objects with the same shape are perceived as different things depending on the information given to their surfaces, where they are placed and their relationship to their surroundings.
Individual elements exist independently, yet create new relationships when combined with other elements.
Conversely, when a single form is taken apart, it contains multiple different elements.
In this exhibition, we experiment in various ways with the act of "composing" itself.
By changing how elements are chosen and combined, we explore how the appearance and meaning of a single form change.
The individual and the collective.
Sameness and difference.
Part and whole.
While manipulating these relationships, we reconstruct the space as a single environment.
"STUDY / COMPOSING ELEMENTS" is an attempt to consider how people and things are formed by the combination of various elements, and to make that process of composition visible through diverse forms of expression.

About the Venue
SHUTL opened in October 2023 as an open creative laboratory where contemporary artists can encounter Japanese culture anew and explore new forms of expression by connecting their own work with tradition. Its tagline describes it as a laboratory for new ways of connecting tradition and the present, aiming to create "the authentic of the future" (未来のオーセンティック).
The space is an open area of about 85 square meters with a ceiling height of about 4 meters and no partitions. It is fitted with hanging boxes with movable panels and a movable wall system that allows the space to be rearranged. These serve as walls, shelves and display stands, and sometimes as nothing at all. Their use is not decided in advance.
