June 16 is Wagashi Day (和菓子の日) in Japan. The date traces its origins to 848, when Emperor Nimmyo offered 16 confections and rice cakes at a shrine ceremony on the 16th day of the sixth month — a ritual known as kashoo (嘉祥) — to pray for protection from illness and to welcome good health. Among the ingredients used in this tradition, red beans (azuki) have long been regarded as auspicious, believed to ward off misfortune and invite well-being.
To mark the occasion, Daimaru Tokyo is featuring a curated selection of 10 anko sweets — including refreshing seasonal water confections alongside popular classics. All prices are tax-inclusive.
