In partnership with UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), Setouchi City in Okayama Prefecture is taking action on refugee support at the local government level.
June 20 is World Refugee Day, designated by the United Nations as a day to show solidarity with people forced to flee their homes. UNHCR calls on communities across Japan to hold awareness events on this date. In cooperation with landmarks nationwide, three sites in Setouchi City will be illuminated in UNHCR blue.
Background and Purpose
June 20 is World Refugee Day — a day to stand in solidarity with people displaced by conflict and persecution, and to reflect on the importance of supporting them.
As part of this commitment, Setouchi City will illuminate three local landmarks in UNHCR blue. The color represents a heartfelt wish for peace and compassion for those facing hardship.
The city hopes this blue light will spark greater awareness of refugee issues and help build a wider circle of empathy and support.
