Limited Matcha Wagashi Now Available at Zenkoji Temple's New Tea Cafe

Saryo Itoen Zenkoji Store opened within the grounds of Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City on March 19, 2026. The Japanese tea cafe, dedicated to offering a relaxing experience through Japanese tea, now features exclusive matcha sweets developed in collaboration with Azumino-based wagashi maker Kochouan (operated by Watahan Mihara Shoten Co., Ltd.).

Two limited sweets are available exclusively at the Zenkoji location.

Matcha Nama-Dorayaki

This special dorayaki features soft skins hand-baked one by one by Kochouan's artisans using matcha carefully selected by Itoen. The fluffy dorayaki skins encase a smooth cream that draws out the rich aroma and gentle bitterness of the matcha, delivering a refined flavor with every bite.

Matcha Nama-Rakugan

Unlike conventional rakugan, this version offers a moist, melt-in-the-mouth texture. Artisans carefully place a smoothly cooked anko filling within the soft dough to achieve a delicate sweetness and refined texture. The combination of Itoen's matcha and the elegant sweetness of wasanbon sugar is designed to shine when enjoyed alongside a cup of Japanese tea.

In addition to these sweets, the cafe serves a selection of Japanese teas including matcha, sencha, and lattes.

Zenkoji Temple attracts visitors year-round as one of Japan's most celebrated temples, welcoming both worshippers and tourists. The Saryo Itoen Zenkoji Store provides a relaxing spot to enjoy traditional Japanese flavors within the historic temple grounds.
