Two baby South American coatis have been born at Anitachi Tokyo Dome City, an indoor petting zoo operated by Izu Shaboten Animal Park.

The first cub — a female — was born on April 12, 2026, to mother "Bianca." A second female cub followed on April 25, 2026, born to mother "Flora."

South American coatis (アカハナグマ) are members of the raccoon family, recognizable by their long snouts and ringed tails. Their scientific name is Nasua nasua, and they are native to the forests stretching from Colombia to Uruguay across South America.

Shortly after birth, a quiet area was set up inside the exhibit to allow each mother and cub to settle in comfortably, so the babies were not visible to visitors at first. By mid-May, both mother-cub pairs had successfully joined father "John" in the main exhibit.

Both pairs are now living together in the exhibit, and the babies are lively and growing quickly — climbing on the tire play equipment and beginning to eat alongside the adults. Notably, both mothers look after all the babies without distinction.

Watching the two young coatis grow up protected by the rest of the group is a rare sight that won't last forever. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and meet the two cubs while they are still at this precious stage of development.

South American coatis are skilled climbers and are often seen scrambling up trees and structures in their enclosure.

Note: The animals may not always be visible depending on their condition on the day of your visit.
