ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025 Projection Mapping Event at Sensoji Temple

A grand projection mapping event titled "ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025" will take place at Sensoji Temple in Taito-ku, Tokyo, from December 3 (Wednesday) to December 7 (Sunday), 2025.

This event will feature stunning projection mapping displays on Sensoji Temple's Hozomon Gate, Five-Story Pagoda, and the Important Cultural Property Nitenmon Gate, utilizing cutting-edge technology to showcase digital animations and majestic visuals inspired by the temple's 1,400-year history and culture.

Projection Mapping at Hozomon Gate, Five-Story Pagoda & Nitenmon Gate

Visitors can enjoy free projection mapping displays on Sensoji Temple's iconic structures, featuring digital animations and visuals inspired by the temple's rich 1,400-year history and cultural heritage.

Hours: December 3-7, 2025, 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM

  • Nitenmon Gate (Important Cultural Property)

Admission: Free, no advance registration required

Details:

  • Hozomon Gate and Five-Story Pagoda: 6-minute content loops with 3-minute intermissions, viewable from Nakamise Shopping Street (south side)
  • Five-Story Pagoda can also be viewed from inside Denboin Garden during the evening special viewing (paid, advance registration required)
  • Nitenmon Gate: 3-minute content loops, projected on the west side (facing the main hall)

Important Notes:

  • Entrance restrictions may be implemented depending on crowd conditions
  • The same projection content will be shown throughout the event period, so visiting during later hours is recommended to avoid crowds
  • Projections will proceed even in light rain, but may be suspended or cancelled in severe weather
  • Tripods, selfie sticks, and other photography equipment are prohibited. Flash photography is not permitted
  • Drone use is strictly prohibited

Special Viewing of Denboin Garden & Ema Hall

Normally closed to the public, the scenic Denboin Garden and Ema Hall, which houses large votive tablets painted by historical artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Hasegawa Settan, and Itsuken (Kano) Isshin, will be open for special daytime viewing. This is the first viewing opportunity in seven years.

Entry Times: 9:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 12:30 PM, 1:00 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 3:00 PM (final entry)

Duration: Approximately 1 hour

Capacity: 100 people per session (tickets close when capacity is reached)

Fee: 5,000 yen (tax included), advance registration required

  • Children under elementary school age: Free
  • Disability discount: 4,000 yen (tax included) for holders of physical disability certificates, Ai no Techou, therapy notebooks, mental health welfare notebooks, atomic bomb survivor health notebooks, and one accompanying person (Mirairo ID accepted)

Notes:

  • Photography is permitted in Denboin Garden but prohibited in Ema Hall

  • Wi-Fi is not available; data charges apply for audio guide usage
  • Late arrivals (30+ minutes) may be denied entry
  • The garden has gravel paths and Ema Hall has stairs and steps; neither is barrier-free accessible

Evening Special Viewing of Denboin Garden

The scenic Denboin Garden will be illuminated and open for special evening viewing, offering a magical nighttime experience.

Fee: 3,000 yen (tax included), advance registration required

  • Children under elementary school age: Free
  • Disability discount: 2,000 yen (tax included) for eligible individuals and one accompanying person (available only through Webket)
