Canal City Fukuoka Washington Hotel (General Manager Tsutsumi, 堤政重) reopened today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following a five-month closure for renovation. Marking the hotel's 30th anniversary this year, the renewal overhauls all 422 guest rooms along with the lobby and other shared spaces to meet guests' increasingly varied needs, offering a more comfortable, refined stay.

The renewed lobby captures the energy of Fukuoka's Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, paired with wood-toned materials that evoke the warmth of Nakasu's food stalls, creating a space where guests can take in Hakata's lively, welcoming character with all five senses. The introduction of self-service check-in and check-out machines and a self-service cloakroom has also greatly improved convenience.
The new guest rooms carry through the "Theater of the City" concept that runs through the entire property, weaving five natural motifs — water, canyon, green, sun, and star — into the room designs to balance playfulness with comfort. Responding to the needs of families and groups, the hotel has also added the "Superior Bunk Four," a new room type fitted with two bunk beds, evolving to suit a wider range of travel styles.
After a restful night in one of the new rooms, guests can head down to the 1st-floor restaurant "Bonjour Plus (ボンジュールプリュ)" the next morning for a varied breakfast buffet built around the rich food culture of Kyushu and Hakata. Alongside Fukuoka specialties like motsunabe (offal hot pot) and karashi mentaiko (spicy cod roe), the renewal introduces new dishes including Kirishima black pork shabu-shabu and conger eel tempura.
The hotel opened in 1996, at the same time as the mixed-use commercial complex Canal City Hakata. About a 10-minute walk from JR Hakata Station and about a 3-minute walk from Kushida-jinja-mae subway station, it has long served as a base for sightseeing and business among visitors to Fukuoka from Japan and abroad.
Design Concept: "Theater of the City"

The renewal elevates "Theater of the City," the concept behind the Canal City Hakata complex, into the hotel's own design language. Five motifs that make up the property — water, canyon, green, sun, and star — are woven throughout the hotel and into the guest room designs, creating a distinctive space where the stay itself becomes part of the memory of the trip.
Lobby: HAKATA VIBES
The lobby that welcomes guests is arranged around artwork expressing the energy of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, balanced with wood-toned materials that evoke the warmth of Nakasu's food stalls. The result is a space that greets guests with the local area's lively, warm character.
About the Artist

Kazuki Umigishi (海岸和輝)
Born in Tokyo in 1984, Umigishi graduated from the Oil Painting course at Tokyo University of the Arts' Faculty of Fine Arts in 2008. After working as a graphic designer and mural artist, he returned in earnest to painting in 2020. Drawing on his background in graphic design, he starts from digital drawing and treats the drawing and erasing of lines as the fundamental act of painting, deepening his interest in the perception of and interaction between colors while exploring the possibilities of color-centered painting. Influenced by design and a range of cultures beyond painting itself, he continues to create work rooted in his own aesthetic sensibility, and shows his work both in Japan and overseas.
Umigishi shared the following about the piece he created for the hotel:
"In creating this work around the theme of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, I noticed that the strength and energy the festival carries overlaps in places with what I've been pursuing in my own work. I think that connection lies not only in the finished piece but also in the process of making it. Building a digital sketch takes only a few hours, but turning it into an actual painting takes weeks or months. An image born in an instant, and a work built up over time — that process overlaps with the meticulous handwork behind the decorated yamakasa floats, and with the structure of the festival's own time, made up of a long preparation period and a single moment of running. My work pursues an abstract expression built from layered, simple brushstrokes and the interaction that arises where colors collide. For this piece, I brought a different rule or structure to each canvas so that each would leave a different impression. I'm not depicting the yamakasa directly, but I hope you'll sense a connection to Hakata Gion Yamakasa somewhere within the layers of color, density, and time."

Responding to the needs of families and group travelers, the hotel has added the "Superior Bunk Four," a new room type fitted with two bunk beds, evolving to suit a wider range of travel styles. (Room renovation is scheduled for completion by the end of November.)
