About Hase-dera

Hase-dera

Known since ancient times as "Hase Kannon," the temple's formal name is Kaikozan Jisho-in Hase-dera. Said to have been founded in 736 (Tenpyo 8) during the Nara period, it is one of Kamakura's oldest temples and was designated an imperial prayer temple (chokugansho) during the reign of Emperor Shomu. Its principal image is the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva (Juichimen Kanzeon Bosatsu), one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan at 9.18 m tall. As the fourth temple on the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, Hase-dera continues to hand down its Buddhist tradition to the present day as a symbol of the Kannon sacred sites of eastern Japan.
