The Japanese Garden Café at Sanyoso in Izu-Nagaoka Onsen (Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture) has been extended. So far, many visitors have shared comments such as "I was able to relax while looking out over the garden" and "I enjoyed the atmosphere unique to Sanyoso." The café will now be open for a longer period so that more people can enjoy it.
The Japanese garden seen from the Registered Tangible Cultural Property main building shows a different face with the changing seasons. In the coming season, when the autumn leaves change color, the scenery is among the most beautiful of the year. The café offers a choice of "anmitsu" (あんみつ), made with bean paste from a long-established bean paste maker in Mishima City and an assortment of fruit, or homemade almond jelly with basil sauce.

The gentle sweetness and refined flavor add to a moment in a special space created by the historic architecture and the Japanese garden. The café is open not only to overnight guests but also to day visitors. Visitors can spend a peaceful time looking out over the garden as it moves from autumn into early winter.

About the Sanyoso Main Building
Sanyoso was built in 1929 as the villa of Hisaya Iwasaki, the eldest son of Yataro Iwasaki, founder of the former Mitsubishi zaibatsu. It is an elegant sukiya-style Japanese residence set within a grand Japanese garden created by Kyoto garden designer Ogawa Jihei. In June 2017, the Agency for Cultural Affairs added it to the Registered Tangible Cultural Properties as a valuable national asset.
The seven registered structures are the entrance and tea room wing, the guest room wing, the central wing, the living room and study wing, Miyuki-no-Ma (御幸の間), the waiting room, and the Roji Gate (露地門).

About the Japanese Garden
The Japanese garden at Sanyoso is a stroll garden of approximately 3,000 tsubo spreading around a pond. Created by Kyoto garden designer Ogawa Jihei, it offers a space where the natural beauty of each season can be enjoyed. The sound of the wind, the song of wild birds, and even the light reflected on the water surface add to the character of the garden.
