Revived Village Inn "kadoya" in Kosuge, Yamanashi Opens Its Cafe on June 15, 2026

A new multi-purpose facility named "kadoya" is set to open in Kosuge Village, Kita-Tsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture. The cafe will soft-open on June 15, 2026 (Monday), ahead of the full grand opening on July 18, 2026 (Saturday), which will also launch a micro hotel, coin laundry, and kids' space. Reservations for the micro hotel are now being accepted via the official website.

About the "kadoya" Revitalization Project

Kosuge Village sits in the headwaters of the Tama River in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture. At its peak, more than 2,000 people called it home, with a lively cluster of local shops and inns in the village center. Among them was "Kadoya," a well-known inn that welcomed both residents and travelers for generations.

The former

Today, the village's population has fallen to around 620, and it is frequently cited among Japan's at-risk municipalities due to depopulation and an aging demographic. The original Kadoya inn closed over time and quietly fell into disrepair — its loss seen as a symbol of the community's ongoing challenges. The "kadoya" project was launched to bring new life to that site and create a gathering place that reconnects people within and beyond the village.

"kadoya" — The Village Lobby

The concept behind the new "kadoya" facility is "opening the village's door."

The revived

Drawing on the original inn's role in daily village life, the revived facility has been designed with a range of uses in mind: a cafe, accommodations, a coin laundry, and a kids' space. For first-time visitors, it offers an entry point into the village and its people. For those who return regularly and want to deepen their ties to the community, it provides a reason to keep coming back. For local residents, it is simply a comfortable place to stop in for coffee, conversation, or a quiet moment in daily life.

Rather than being defined by any single function, "kadoya" aims to be a space where residents, day-trippers, and long-term supporters of the village naturally share the same room — a "Village Lobby" where the connections begin.

Cafe Soft-Opens June 15, 2026

Ahead of the grand opening in July, the "kadoya" cafe opens on June 15 (Monday). The interior features white walls with black beams and pillars, offering a modern feel grounded in the warmth of natural wood — a familiar, unhurried atmosphere. With approximately 40 seats spread across table seating, a counter, and raised tatami-style seating, it welcomes tourists dropping in before exploring the village, coffee lovers making the trip from nearby towns, and everyday villagers alike.

The menu centers on specialty coffee supervised by ONIBUS COFFEE, with light meals and sweets rounding out the offerings. The sweets are being developed in collaboration with the chef from "Satologue," a culinary team committed to food that expresses local character. For savory options, the cafe has partnered with "Genryu Pan Kobo," a local bakery, to serve smørrebrød — Nordic-style open sandwiches made with bread baked in the village.

Community Connections Through "kadoya"

One of the key goals for Kosuge Village's future is expanding its "related population" — people who, without necessarily relocating to the village, visit repeatedly, build relationships, and remain engaged over time. "kadoya" is envisioned not as a one-time tourist stop, but as a place where each visit naturally deepens the bond between guests and the village.

The facility was developed with partial support from national government subsidies. As a community hub built from the bones of a historic inn, it aims to be the kind of place that makes people want to return to Kosuge — again and again.

Micro Hotel Opening July 18, 2026

Alongside the cafe, a micro hotel will open as part of the grand opening on July 18, 2026 (Saturday). The hotel will offer 7 rooms in total — including single-occupancy options — with capacity for up to 16 guests. Guests will be able to enjoy the cafe before or after their stay, while exploring the village's hot springs, restaurants, and outdoor activities for a fuller Kosuge Village experience.
