New Summer-Limited "Salted Watermelon Hitokuchi Jelly" Launches Using Kumamoto Watermelon Purée

A new summer treat is now on sale in supermarket produce sections. Hokushin Foods (headquartered in Ebetsu, Hokkaido) has added the "Kumamoto Salty Watermelon Hitokuchi Jelly" to its "Hitokuchi Jelly" series as a summer-limited product, available from May 15, 2026 through the end of August.

Background

In recent years, prolonged summer heat has driven growing consumer interest in snacks that support both hydration and salt intake. Hokushin Foods has been developing its "Hitokuchi Jelly" series for the produce sections of supermarkets, positioning it as an easy-to-eat dessert suited to the fresh-fruit aisle.

About the New Product

This addition was created as a summer-specific entry in the series. It follows the lineup's core design principles: bite-sized pieces and individual packaging that make it convenient for sharing or eating on the go.

The flavor concept draws on the Japanese custom of sprinkling salt on watermelon. Rather than going with other salted varieties such as salted lemon or salted lychee, watermelon was chosen for its natural affinity with the produce section setting. The result is a product where the natural sweetness of watermelon is complemented by a moderate saltiness, creating a well-balanced taste.

Product Features

  • Uses Kumamoto watermelon purée
  • Sweet and salty flavor balance
  • 21g bite-sized format for easy eating
  • Individually wrapped, easy to share and convenient to carry
  • Can be enjoyed chilled as-is, or frozen for a sorbet-like texture
  • Suited to light summer snacking and replenishing fluids and salt on hot days

Consumer Survey

Prior to launch, Hokushin Foods conducted a taste-test survey among participants at club activities at Sapporo Seishu High School. When asked whether they make a conscious effort to consume salt during summer, 100% of respondents answered "yes," reflecting high awareness of salt replenishment in the heat.

All respondents said they would either purchase the product or consider purchasing it depending on price. Additionally, 59.5% rated the taste as "delicious."
