Aya Nishikata's Solo Exhibition "Tokiori" Opens at Mid-Century MODERN in Aobadai, October 16 to 25

Mid-Century MODERN (ミッドセンチュリーモダン), an interior shop in Meguro, Tokyo, will hold "Tokiori (時織) – A Timeless Collaboration / Traditional Craftsmanship × American Vintage Furniture," a solo exhibition by weaving artist Aya Nishikata (西形彩), from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 25, 2026. Nishikata pursues her own approach to textile expression.

This is Nishikata's first collaboration with furniture. The exhibition features George Nelson's Marshmallow Sofa (マシュマロソファ), covered in wool fabric that she designed for the show and wove herself. The sofa is on display and for sale, limited to one piece.

By combining textiles born of traditional handwork with vintage furniture loved across the decades, the exhibition presents a new form of expression where past and present meet. Visitors can experience Nishikata's world of "weaving time" in a venue where material, technique and time resonate with one another.

Highlights

Handwoven textiles × vintage furniture: layering new time onto classic furniture

Layering the colors and depth unique to hand weaving over the texture of furniture that has aged over many years, the exhibition recasts functional furniture as art to be admired.

Weaving and color that cross the boundaries of the canvas

Nishikata also takes on dynamic works in which textile seems to emerge from within a torn canvas. The venue shows a varied group of works that span weaving techniques and pure color expression, including a large 130-gō (130号) piece.

A 100-piece diary-like series recording 100 days of emotion

The series consists of 100 works, one made each day, with that day's feelings recorded on the canvas. Transparent lines hidden in each piece mark the month (vertical) and the day (horizontal), offering a clue to when each work was made.

A Message from Aya Nishikata

"This is my first collaboration with furniture. I hope visitors will see and touch the texture and colors of hand weaving in person, and have a conversation with their own senses through the works. Please feel free to enjoy whatever stirs in you at the venue. The works on display are also planned to be sold. I sincerely look forward to welcoming you."
