Sky Lantern 2026 & Shiga Prefecture Urban Development Future Expo: A Magical Autumn Night
Sky Lantern 2026 & Shiga Prefecture Urban Development Future Expo lets visitors experience the appeal of Shiga Prefecture firsthand. Local communities, businesses, and government come together for an event where children can encounter regional attractions and future careers through hands-on experiences, sparking ideas about their own futures.
During the day, a "time to learn about the future" offers hands-on content connecting visitors with the local area and local jobs. It includes regional promotion booths run by tourism associations and chambers of commerce, sales of local specialties, vehicle displays from the Shiga Prefectural Police and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, hands-on and interactive events with sports teams, and a chance to operate a real excavator. Visitors can also enjoy contact experiences with micro pigs, reptiles, and insects, plus a marche and festival stalls featuring around 15 shops, and food-truck fare. In the evening, "a time to light wishes for the future" brings Sky Lantern 2026 to life: visitors write their dreams and wishes on around 500 uniformly colored lanterns and light them all at once, coloring the autumn night sky. Because the lanterns are collected afterward and can be taken home, they double as a keepsake of the day's memories.
Note: Sky Lantern 2026 requires a paid ticket, and some Urban Development Future Expo content also carries a fee. Check the special event page for details.
