GOOD TIDE OBAMA Activity Event at Obama Onsen on October 18 Offers Sea Kayaking, SUP and Fishing Cruises

Obama Onsen in Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, will host the activity event GOOD TIDE OBAMA on Sunday, October 18, 2026. The event is organized by 雲仙観光局.

It is aimed at young people who are interested in activities but feel they "don't know where to start" or "lack a reason to take the first step." The event combines marine activities unique to Obama Onsen with the sunset, giving visitors a chance to try something new. It also aims to show Obama Onsen's appeal beyond its hot springs and to encourage both first-time and repeat visits.

Tachibana Bay stretches right in front of the hot spring town, and the event turns it from a sea to look at into a sea to play in. Beginner-friendly sea kayaking, SUP, and boat fishing that requires no gear of your own are on offer. Fish you catch can be filleted by a local chef and cooked with Obama Onsen's steam. The day ends with the sun setting over Tachibana Bay. Admission is free, and reservations are currently open for some programs.

The Sea at Obama Onsen

Tachibana Bay, which faces Obama Onsen, is a soothing spot with beautiful scenery where mountains and sea meet. Throughout the year the sun sets into the sea there, so beautifully that Saito Mokichi (斎藤茂吉) wrote a poem about it. At night, the fishing lights (漁火) on the water create a dreamlike view. During the day, visitors can stroll along the coastline, which has walking paths, foot baths, and open plazas, or wander through the curving narrow lanes and slopes of 富津 while feeling the sea breeze. The plaza along Tachibana Bay is loved by many as a place for festivals and everyday relaxation.

Three Features of GOOD TIDE OBAMA

1. Come empty-handed, beginners welcome — try what you have always wanted to do

Fishing tackle and life jackets are lent to participants, and instructors accompany them, so first-timers can join.

2. Catch it, have it filleted, and enjoy it with hot spring steam

Fish caught on the boat are filleted by a local chef. They can be enjoyed cooked with Obama Onsen's steam or as fresh sashimi. It is an experience that is only possible in Obama, where the sea and the hot spring town sit side by side.

3. End the day with the sunset over Tachibana Bay

Sunset is expected at around 5:45 PM. You can watch it from the sea by kayak or cruise, or from land at the venue with coffee, drinks, and meals prepared by local chefs that are available only on that day.

Sea Kayaking / Sunset Sea Kayaking

A sea kayaker paddling toward the setting sun

Paddling a kayak out on the water gives a view of Obama's scenery and the sunset that feels different from the view on land. Visitors can see the sunset's glittering path across the water and the gradient of the sky and sea changing moment by moment. Stopping the paddle and simply taking in the view is a special way to spend the time.

Stable kayaks are used and guides give careful instruction, so first-timers can take part with confidence.

  • Fee: ¥4,000 per kayak (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM) / ¥5,000 per kayak (5:00 PM to 6:00 PM). Prices differ between daytime and sunset sessions.
  • Duration: About 1 hour (including instructions)
  • Capacity per session: 8 kayaks (8 to 14 people)
  • How to join: Advance reservation recommended (walk-ups are accepted if spots are available on the day)

SUP
