About Mitsukoshi's History

Mitsukoshi was founded in 1673 (Enpo 1) as a kimono shop called "Echigoya."

Founder Takatoshi Mitsui, unfettered by previous commercial customs and quick to recognize the emergence of new customer segments due to social changes, created numerous business methods that are now considered standard. He was the first in the world to establish in-store sales, cash transactions, and fixed-price sales under the principle "Cash payment at the shop front, no bargaining," and by declaring "We sell even small fabric pieces of any size," he broke the custom of selling only by the roll, enabling customers to purchase only what they wanted in the amount they desired. This innovative approach made kimono, previously exclusive to the wealthy, accessible to the general public.

In 1904 (Meiji 37), Mitsukoshi declared the beginning of Japan's first department store. Upon incorporation, on December 20, they sent greeting letters containing the "Department Store Declaration" to customers and business partners nationwide, and announced it in major newspapers at the beginning of 1905 (Meiji 38). By declaring the birth of the department store to all stakeholders, the history of department stores in Japan began. Since its founding, while always putting customers first and repeatedly "innovating" with creative ideas adapted to changing times, Mitsukoshi continues to propose rich living culture with the unchanging "spirit of wholehearted service" toward customers.
