MUDANI Izumi Opens in Kyoto with Two Whole-House Rental Stays Built Around Groundwater Wellness

Two adjoining whole-house rental inns, MUDANI Izumi (MUDANI 泉), open on Sunday, November 1, 2026 in Shogyoji-cho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto. The inns are run by MUDANI Co., Ltd. (株式会社MUDANI), headquartered in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto.

MUDANI Izumi is one of the properties under "MUDANI Signature," a new brand from the company that offers refined service and playful stay experiences.

A single spring of groundwater wells up beneath the Kyoto machiya townhouses. Built around that groundwater, the facility offers two entirely different ways of restoring body and mind, one in EAST and one in WEST. It is a place to experience the Machiya × Wellness concept of the MUDANI Signature series through the rhythm of the body.

Two Forces Born from Kyoto Groundwater

Both experiences start from the same Kyoto groundwater, but they work in opposite directions.

In EAST, guests alternate between the heat of a storehouse (kura) sauna and the cold of the groundwater, raising the heart rate sharply before letting it settle quietly. This is a flow "from the outside in" (centripetal). In WEST, guests first tune their senses with sound and fragrance, then soak in a groundwater bath and release that stillness out into the courtyard garden. This is a flow "from the inside out" (centrifugal).

Centripetal and centrifugal, both from one spring. The two adjoining houses each use a different approach to loosen the body and senses from their everyday rhythm.

MUDANI Izumi EAST: Centripetal

The sauna in EAST, converted from a storehouse, has straw laid over its walls and floor, so guests take in the heat and fragrance in the dim light.

MUDANI Izumi EAST

The moment guests plunge their flushed bodies into the cold bath filled with water drawn up from underground, the heart rate jumps. Afterward, in the open-air bath and the relaxation (totonoi) area, the heartbeat slowly calms.

Two kinds of scented kugel switch up the senses during the course, and the sound of a singing bowl rung at the end closes out the relaxation time.

MUDANI Izumi EAST relaxation area

Taking in outside stimulation, circulating it, and returning to stillness: MUDANI Izumi EAST is a "centripetal" experience that draws a circle from motion to calm.

The storehouse sauna, the groundwater cold bath and open-air bath, and the relaxation area are set in calming spaces that subtly add a modern touch to the character of a machiya.

Day-Use Private Sauna Also Planned

EAST is also planned to be offered as a private sauna, so that non-staying guests can experience the storehouse sauna and groundwater cold bath on a day trip.

Even for a day visit, the sauna, cold bath, open-air bath, and relaxation area are used in a private setting by one group at a time.

The start date, hours, prices, capacity, and reservation method will be announced once they are decided.

MUDANI Izumi WEST: Centrifugal

Guests listen to a singing bowl and light a stick of incense. In WEST, they wait for their senses to gather slowly inward, then sink into a storehouse bath filled with Kyoto groundwater. From the tub, the courtyard garden (tsubo-niwa) comes into view, and stillness and ease spread across the scene as well.

After leaving the bath, guests head to the veranda (engawa) facing the living room. Sitting on cattail-grass zazen cushions, they enjoy the afterglow while looking out at the same courtyard garden.

The stillness gathered inside is now released outward. MUDANI Izumi WEST is a "centrifugal" experience that expands from calm to motion. Guests can relax in a space that adds a touch of Western style to the machiya's original courtyard garden and veranda.

Two Adjoining Houses, Two Very Different Stays

Each of the two adjoining houses is rented out as a whole. EAST sleeps up to 7 guests and WEST up to 5 guests.

EAST suits a stay that draws body and mind further and further inward through large swings between heat and cold. WEST suits a stay that spreads inner stillness outward through sound, fragrance, hot water, and the garden.

Guests can choose between the two different "circulations" to match the purpose of their trip and how they like to spend their time.
