Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel (Nakamura-ku, Nagoya; General Manager Atsushi Sugimoto) is bringing back a summer tradition on the 15th-floor main lobby: "Kingyo no Mai" (錦魚の舞), running for about one month from July 28 (Tue) to August 31 (Mon), 2026.
The History of Yatomi Goldfish
Yatomi goldfish have a history stretching back around 150 years. According to local lore, it began when a goldfish merchant let his goldfish rest in a pond at a post town in Maegasu (present-day Yatomi City), and the owner of a local terakoya (temple school) was so charmed by their appearance that he bought and raised them himself.
About 200 Goldfish in a Giant Tank
The lobby now holds a massive tank measuring up to 240 cm in width. Around 200 goldfish swim inside, spanning 12 breeds and 30 varieties, including Ranchu bred in Yatomi as well as rarer types.
Visitors can take in Ranchu, Tancho, Oranda Shishigashira, and Edonishiki, alongside varieties that have grown increasingly scarce in recent years, such as black Demekin, Seibungyo, and Chakin, all swimming gracefully for a cool, refreshing summer moment.
Tank Decor Inspired by Utagawa Kuniyoshi
This year, the tank is decorated with art inspired by the ukiyo-e prints of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period.
Alongside the goldfish, guests can enjoy decor reflecting Japan's regional and traditional culture, including motifs from playful, humorous ukiyo-e prints such as "Kingyo Zukushi" (Goldfish Medley), which personifies goldfish in whimsical, human-like poses for visitors from Japan and abroad.
In addition, the "Art Aquarium Exhibition Nagoya 2026," which reimagines Japan's centuries-old goldfish-viewing culture as contemporary art, is currently underway nearby at Chunichi Hall in Sakae, Nagoya.
Set amid light, sound, and fragrance, the exhibition presents a fantastical world featuring goldfish of many different kinds of beauty.
