Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel (Nakamura-ku, Nagoya, directly above JR Nagoya Station; General Manager Atsushi Sugimoto) is introducing a new wedding style: floral decoration overseen by ikebana artist Mika Otani.
Otani, who has supervised ikebana and floral styling for numerous films, dramas, and commercials, is stepping into the bridal world in earnest for the first time, bringing new possibilities for flowers to hotel weddings.
Creating Wedding Florals Unlike Anything Guests Have Seen Before
This time, rather than simply decorating the venue, Otani is creating spaces meant to hold the memories of everyone who gathers there on that day.
The goal is a floral space striking enough that guests stop in their tracks the moment they enter, thinking, "I've never seen a reception like this before."
In July, the arrangements were created and photographed in several of the hotel's reception venues.
In the hotel's main banquet space, the Towers Ballroom, 200 white roses and an abundance of phalaenopsis orchids create an atmosphere of elegance and splendor befitting a royal wedding.
Within a room of roughly 600 square meters with an approximately 8-meter ceiling and a glittering chandelier, the design pairs the venue's refined atmosphere with wedding florals that carry an unmistakable presence.
Sarashi-shuro (晒しシュロ) — bleached palm fiber fanned out like a bird's wings — symbolizes the newlyweds' life ahead taking flight toward a journey of happiness, creating a wedding that stays in the memory.
On the 17th floor, the Lupinus hall evokes the feeling of being welcomed into a New York mansion, with a refined yet joyful wedding scene designed to fill the space with brightness and happiness.
Working with flowers alongside branches, leaves, driftwood, and other materials, Otani turns the reception venue itself into a single work of art — a distinct sensibility, as an ikebana artist, that gives rise to a new form of wedding flowers.
Part of this new wedding floral plan will be introduced at the bridal fair on August 30 (Sunday). Through this collaboration between an ikebana artist and a hotel, Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel and Otani are proposing new possibilities for flowers, for weddings that become a special anniversary unlike any other.
This autumn, Otani's work is also planned to be displayed in the hotel lobby, beyond the wedding venues.
About Mika Otani
Otani has supervised ikebana and floral decoration for numerous films, dramas, and commercials. For the television drama Takane no Hana (高嶺の花), she created all 174 arrangements that appeared on screen, drawing attention for the achievement.
She has also given demonstrations in Rome, Prague, New Delhi, Shanghai, and other cities in Japan and abroad, developing her own style that blends traditional ikebana with a contemporary sensibility. In 2022, she exhibited at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale (越後妻有・大地の芸術祭), also working as an artist in her own right.
Other work includes the Netflix series Glass Heart (グラスハート) and Tokyo Swindlers (地面師たち), as well as the films A Man (ある男) and Rurouni Kenshin: The Final (るろうに剣心 最終章 The Final).
