Nara Ikimono Museum (NARA IKIMONO MUSEUM), located inside the Mi-Nara shopping complex in Nara City, is holding the "Chameleon Observation Camp" (カメレオン観察キャンプ) exhibition from September 9 through September 30. The museum's last exhibit zone, "NIM Camp," is transformed into a forest setting for the occasion, displaying four chameleon species including Oustalet's chameleon (ウスタレカメレオン), which can grow to a total length of nearly 70 cm.
In 2025, the museum established its own "Chameleon Day" on September 9, inspired by the way a chameleon's curled tail resembles the numeral "9." This year marks the second time the event has been held.
Chameleon Observation Camp Exhibition
This exhibition takes place in "NIM Camp," the museum's last exhibit zone. Normally a rest area for visitors who have finished viewing the exhibits, the space is transformed for the event into a forest surrounded by trees and plants, where four chameleon species are on display. A limited-time coloring experience is also offered alongside the exhibition, for a participation fee of 100 yen (tax included) per session, letting visitors freely color the provided sheets.
Chameleons on Display
Spiny Chameleon (スパイニーカメレオン)
Its serrated crest lining the back stands out at a glance, and a closer look reveals a beautiful body coloration blending green and blue.
Oustalet's Chameleon (ウスタレカメレオン)
A large species found widely across Madagascar. Its total length is the longest in the chameleon family, reaching up to about 70 cm.
Panther Chameleon, Ambilobe (パンサーカメレオン（アンビローブ）)
Native to Madagascar. Individuals from the region known as Ambilobe are known for their vivid red and blue coloration.
Veiled Chameleon, Female (エボシカメレオン（メス）)
Known for the protrusion on its head called a "casque." Females have a smaller casque than males, and their body coloration also varies.
