SOZO Releases "VERMEER × SOZO AROMA INCENSE," a 20-Minute Journey Through Vermeer's Colors and Scents

SOZO, the incense brand from 株式会社新香 (Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture), is releasing "VERMEER × SOZO AROMA INCENSE," a collaboration with Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, held in the collection of the Mauritshuis.

This is not simply incense built around a single scent inspired by Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Drawing on SOZO's own technique for shifting multiple colors and scents within a single stick over time, the product expresses the color, light, stillness, and lingering impression found in Vermeer's work as an "experience of appreciating color and scent" lasting about 20 minutes.

It goes on sale to coincide with the "Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring" exhibition, running at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka from Friday, August 21, 2026.

An Expression Only SOZO Can Create

At SOZO, a single stick of incense does more than combine multiple colors and scents — the order and timing of each shift, and even the burn characteristics, are adjusted too, designing "color, scent, and time" as one unified whole.

For this product as well, three colors inspired by Vermeer's color and expression were paired with matching scents, with color, scent, and burn time engineered within a single stick so that all three shift in sequence over about 20 minutes.

This expressive range is one of the reasons dot to dot today (SOUP株式会社), who handled the planning and package design, chose SOZO as a collaboration partner.

As it burns, color and scent shift from Lead tin yellow to Ultramarine

About 20 Minutes of Appreciation as Color and Scent Shift

A stick before it's lit — the change begins here

Standing before a work by Vermeer, many things come into view at once: the stillness surrounding the figure, the colors and expressions shaped by light, the background, and more. And even after the viewing ends, that impression lingers quietly.

"VERMEER × SOZO AROMA INCENSE" expresses that experience of appreciation as a span of time in which color and scent shift.

Once lit, the color and scent inside a single stick change little by little. It burns for about 20 minutes.

Rather than watching the clock, attention settles quietly on that change.

It is a way of appreciating the shifting color and scent as if facing a masterpiece.

The incense is designed for enjoying that kind of time within everyday life.

Bringing Vermeer's Colors Into the Incense Itself

The three colors: Lead tin yellow, Ultramarine, and Pointillé

VERMEER x SOZO aroma Incense

The color names on the package are drawn from pigments Vermeer actually used — "Lead tin yellow" and "Ultramarine" — along with "Pointillé," a painting technique.

The color of the incense itself was also designed around each of those color names.

  • Lead tin yellow — a warm yellow that softly reflects light.
  • Ultramarine — a quietly clear blue born from lapis lazuli.
  • Pointillé — grains of light and their afterglow, reflecting Vermeer's pointillé technique.

By carrying the color names beyond the package and through to the incense itself, the product lets people experience Vermeer's world of color and expression together with scent.

The Experience Begins the Moment You Open the Box

The package, and the three incense colors that reflect Vermeer's palette

The package, featuring Girl with a Pearl Earring, is also a key part of shaping the product's world.

Pick it up, open the flap, and the artwork appears; inside, three colors of incense reflecting Vermeer's palette come into view.

Encountering the artwork, taking out the incense, lighting it — that entire sequence was designed as a single act of appreciation.

Planning and package design are handled by dot to dot today (SOUP株式会社).

Developer Comment

株式会社新香 Representative Director 矢野剛史 shared the following comment:

"When we started, the first question was not 'what kind of scent comes to mind from a work by Vermeer.'

The starting point was thinking about how SOZO could express the color, light, and stillness felt when viewing a work by Vermeer, along with the impression that lingers afterward.

Rather than explaining the work through a single scent, we hoped that quietly turning one's attention to the shifting color and scent could itself become an experience of feeling Vermeer's world.

We hope people take their time with the roughly 20 minutes, the way one would face a masterpiece."
