Takatsuki City is home to Imashirozuka Kofun, believed to be the actual burial mound of Emperor Keitai, along with the city-run Imashirozuka Ancient History Museum. An Annual Tradition Marking "Haniwa Day"
Takatsuki City has designated August 20 — the birthday of Hanitan, its mascot character modeled on a warrior haniwa — as "Haniwa Day." Each year, to mark the occasion, the city holds a commemorative lecture introducing its rich history and culture through the haniwa, kofun, and other cultural heritage found in Takatsuki.
This Year's Theme: The Reign of Emperor Keitai as Seen from Chikushi
This year's lecture, held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, welcomes Atsushi Kojima, a full-time lecturer in the Department of Historical Heritage at Kyoto Tachibana University's Faculty of Humanities, under the theme "The Reign of Emperor Keitai as Seen from Chikushi." Kojima, whose research has centered on the analysis of archaeological materials from the Chikushi and northern Kyushu region, will discuss the relationship between local society and royal authority, along with the true nature of the Iwai Rebellion — said to be the largest conflict of the Kofun period — drawing on his most recent research findings.
