THE YARD, a kimono brand operated by Yamato Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo), has released new visuals for its 2026 spring/summer season. The collection goes on sale sequentially from Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Kimono to Wear Like a White Shirt
THE YARD is built around the concept of "kimono to wear like a white shirt, creating a new kind of everyday." The brand takes the view that kimono, too, can have a simple and minimal aesthetic — a perspective that stands apart from the ornate and glamorous image often associated with traditional Japanese dress.
Just as the choice of fabric and styling can dramatically change the impression of a white shirt, THE YARD's kimono transforms quietly with a single obiage sash or a small obidome clasp. The brand pursues its craft with a focus on subtle distinctions in color and material.
THE YARD, Year 26 — Spring/Summer / Usurai (Thin Ice)
The collection's theme evokes the thin ice that forms at the water's edge at the start of spring, melting away at the touch of a fingertip. That fleeting, ephemeral quality is expressed through color.
Styling accessories include glassware with a transparent feel and small silver obidome crafted with a white finish, conveying a delicate and ephemeral impression reminiscent of ice. The collection is intended to bring a sense of coolness through both the feel of the fabric and the visual impression of colors and materials.
Hemp (asa) is at the core of the collection, chosen for its comfort during the warmer months. Breathable, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying, hemp is well-suited to spring and summer wear. The lineup features Near-Omi crepe (Omi-chijimi) from Shiga Prefecture, hemp shibori fabric dyed with resist-dyeing in Cambodia and finished in Arimatsu-Narumi, hemp yukata dyed in Ishikawa Prefecture, and obi woven with hemp alongside washi paper and silk in Yamagata Prefecture — a rich showcase of craftsmanship from various regions across Japan.
