Services at Toji laboratory
Japan once had a bathing culture called "toji," in which people would soak in hot springs at turning points in life and spend time unhurried. Soaking in the water and taking time to face oneself became a cherished part of everyday life. In today's busy world, it's easy to forget to even pause and catch a breath. Toji laboratory proposes a new bathing culture that stays close to this way of life, built around enjoying water and fragrance.
Personal Bath Cosmetic "YUYAKU"
See "How to Choose YUYAKU" below for full details.
Seasonal Flowers and Produce for Seasonal Baths
Japan has long had a custom of floating seasonal plants and produce in the bath, as with yuzu-citrus baths. Following this tradition, the store stocks seasonal vegetables and fruit unique to the time of year. Customers can float them in the bath as a seasonal treat or enjoy eating them, experiencing the current season through both the bath and the table.
Workshops
The store hosts workshops where visitors can craft, by hand, a product to enjoy in the bath. Guests choose a fragrance and color to match their mood that day and take home something made just for them.
Original Goods
Original goods such as tenugui hand towels are sold in the store. Goods featuring illustrations by Kiyoshi Kuroda, who works on the 湯躍 brand's illustrations, are also available.
How to Choose YUYAKU
Getting to know yourself through combinations of water quality and fragrance.
YUYAKU is a bath cosmetic that lets customers combine a water quality with a fragrance to create "a bath they make themselves."
This personal bath preparation, which lets customers find the water that fits "who they are right now" from more than 100 combinations, comes in two types: a water-quality bath preparation and a fragrance bath preparation.
It's a small, made-to-order bath preparation that matches how you feel that day.
Step 1. Choose the Water Type and Texture
1-1: Choose the type
Types include a "chloride-type water" that gently wraps the skin, a "sulfate-type water" known for a refreshingly clean feeling after bathing, and a "bicarbonate-type water" known for its smooth texture.
1-2: Choose the texture
For texture, options include cloudiness and viscosity. Cloudiness can be chosen from three levels: clear, semi-transparent, and cloudy. Viscosity reflects how much thickening ingredient is blended in, letting customers choose the feel of the water to their liking.
Step 2. Choose the Fragrance and Color
More than 10 fragrances and colors are available, offered in a "Standard" line and a "Medessence" line made with special essential oils.
Step 3. Your Bath for Today Is Complete
Combining the chosen water quality, fragrance, and color creates your own special bath time, a single bath that matches your mood for the day. (Each element can also be used on its own.)

YUYAKU Tomigaya: "Bringing Toji to the City"
Toji was once a practice of staying in a hot spring town and spending anywhere from several days to several weeks conditioning the body.
YUYAKU is a place that translates this culture into contemporary urban life. What it delivers is not simply a bath additive but time, at the end of the day, to prepare a bath and face one's own body. It is an attempt to bring toji out of something special and into everyday life.
The starting point for the project was a yunohana hut in Beppu. Components contained in the land are extracted as "yunohana" (hot spring mineral deposits) and used in daily baths. In this lies wisdom rooted in the land, for carrying the power of the earth into daily life.
In translating this practice into an urban space, we captured contemporary toji as a sequence of acts: choosing, making, and touching.
Within the existing building's long, narrow floor plan, we ran a single path from the street side through to the greenway side. By removing the wall that had closed off the greenway side and adding a new door, we connected the two streets, creating a space you can walk straight through. The vaulted ceiling covering this path gently welcomes people in and gives the whole space a soft impression.
At the center of the space, we set a counter reminiscent of a medicine chest. Customers choose a bath to match their mood or condition, and the chosen bath is dispensed from one of the small wooden doors lining the wall.
Covering the counter are original tiles fired with Beppu's yunohana sprinkled onto the surface. Chemical reactions during firing produce bubbles and discoloration, creating an uneven expression reminiscent of a cross-section of stone. By using yunohana taken from the land as a building material, the climate of Beppu is carried into the Tomigaya space.
Above the counter, a slender hot-water pipe resembling a hanging post extends down from the ceiling; against the heaviness of the plaster and tile, this single vertical line lends the space a sense of lightness. Water flows from its tip, and customers can actually try YUYAKU in a sink built as one with terrazzo-finished plaster.
Entering from the street, choosing a bath, touching the water, and passing through to the greenway: we designed this short passage as a small path for experiencing toji within the city.

Logo Design
The founder's wish to let every household enjoy a hot spring every day, and an episode from the company's founding years in which the founder spent 11 years researching using a round wooden tub while developing bath additives — starting from these two points, we explored the elements at the core of the design.
The logo mark is composed by overlapping the "onsen mark," widely beloved in Japan as a symbol of hot springs, with a smooth oval shape evocative of a household bathtub. It aims to symbolize the founder's wishes and the origin of the business, becoming a banner to guide the company's path forward.
For the logotype, while keeping in mind that the store name includes the traditional word "toji," we custom-designed neutral lettering that would feel natural to a wide range of age groups without leaning toward any particular generation.
We hope that hot spring and toji culture will be carried forward into the next era, with this store as a new starting point.
