A new "last-minute" plan lets guests watch the 49th Sumida River Fireworks Festival, held on July 25, 2026 (Saturday), from the water. Tokyo Waterways, a river cruise operator based in Sumida City, Tokyo, is now taking reservations for the viewing cruise.
By dropping meal and drink service and keeping the plan to cruise fare only, the price has been brought down from the standard ¥35,000 to ¥27,500 — a ¥7,500 discount, about 21% off.
A Popular Cruise Returns for a Second Year

Last year's Sumida River Fireworks Festival cruise drew a strong response, with guests praising the chance to enjoy the fireworks at ease without worrying about crowds and the open, expansive feeling only a boat can offer.
Building on that response, Tokyo Waterways is bringing back the Sumida River Fireworks Festival viewing cruise for 2026, renewed this year as a last-minute plan so more guests can enjoy the fireworks from a prime seat on the water.
On the day of the event, large gatherings are expected across Tokyo in addition to the Sumida River Fireworks Festival itself, and nearby transportation and viewing areas are expected to be more crowded than in previous years.
The cruise offers an option for those who want to avoid the crowds on the ground and take in the fireworks at ease from the water.
Plan Highlights

1. A special price for cruise fare only
By leaving out meals and drinks, the plan reaches its last-minute price of ¥27,500, down from the standard ¥35,000 — a ¥7,500 discount, about 21% off.
It suits travelers who want to enjoy the fireworks while keeping costs down.
2. Bring your own food and drinks
Guests are free to bring their own drinks, including alcohol, along with bento boxes from a department store food hall or homemade snacks.
It lets each guest enjoy the cruise in their own style.
3. A simple, no-frills plan
The fee covers cruise fare only, with no extra options included, making it a fit for those who simply want to watch the fireworks from the water.
Viewed from the open-top, roofless boat, the fireworks appear with nothing to block the view.
Guests can settle in with a drink of their choice and take in the fireworks blooming overhead alongside their reflection on the water.
About the Sumida River Fireworks Festival

The festival traces its roots to the Ryogoku Kawabiraki river-opening ceremony that began in 1733 (Kyoho 18), making it one of Japan's oldest fireworks festivals.
The 2026 edition marks the 49th festival, held on July 25 (Saturday) from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM — the first venue starting at 7:00 PM and the second at 7:30 PM — with about 20,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky over the Sumida River across both venues.
The display ranges from traditional chrysanthemum and peony shapes to creative fireworks made with the latest techniques, set against the backdrop of Tokyo's night skyline.

Notes
Because this last-minute price is made possible by limiting the plan to cruise fare only, cancellations after booking are subject to a 100% cancellation fee, unlike the standard plan.
Guests are asked to confirm this before booking. Sales end once all seats are filled, and the cruise is expected to sell out, so early reservations are recommended.
