Modern Ukiyo-e Meets Daily Life - Wamonoya Kaya × Painter Suzuki Hyottoko Collaboration Collection Launches February 2026

Japanese lifestyle brand Wamonoya Kaya (operated by Amina Collection Co., Ltd.) is launching its first collaborative collection with internationally acclaimed painter Suzuki Hyottoko in mid-February 2026 at all directly managed stores, the official online shop, and authorized retailers nationwide. This collection brings Suzuki's unique worldview to life across 12 items including aloha shirts, reversible jackets, and traditional Japanese goods, projecting the satirical spirit of ukiyo-e onto modern "household appliances" and everyday scenes. With the concept "Art is not just for display, but completes itself when worn," this collaboration proposes a "new sense of Japanese style" that adds humor and color to daily life.

Bringing Ukiyo-e Satire to Modern Daily Life

At first glance, they appear to be traditional ukiyo-e prints. But look closer, and you'll find household appliances and contemporary motifs depicted. Suzuki Hyottoko's works lightly project the satire and playfulness that ukiyo-e originally possessed onto modern living. In the midst of our busy daily routines, his art delivers moments that make you smile. This shared vision with Wamonoya Kaya's philosophy of "re-creating Japanese DNA" brought this collaboration to life.

About Painter Suzuki Hyottoko

After graduating from Musashino Art University, Suzuki worked at an animation production company before going independent. He has gained attention both domestically and internationally as a painter, primarily through his "Kaden-zu (Household Appliance Illustrations)" series, which combines the satirical spirit of ukiyo-e with household appliances and contemporary life scenes. He works across a wide range of fields, including book cover design and CD jacket artwork.

The specially commissioned works "Tairyo (Big Catch)" and "Ryuko (Dragon and Tiger)" are particularly noteworthy pieces in this collection. Suzuki's unique worldview expands from art to display into wearable art through craftsman techniques and carefully selected textiles.

◎ Specially Commissioned Work "Tairyo (Big Catch)"

Artist's Comment

This work is inspired by Tairyobata (big catch flags), also called Fukuraibata, which celebrate new beginnings. I depicted lucky charms and small tools working together to create great fortune, represented as a sea bream. Created with the hope that during seasons of change and moments when you feel a bit uncertain, this work can be a bright presence encouraging you forward.

Acrylic Uchiwa Fans (5 varieties / ¥1,650 each, tax included)

Furoshiki wrapping cloths (5 varieties / ¥3,630 each, tax included) can be displayed on walls as tapestries for art interior decoration.

Water-resistant furoshiki can also be tied or fitted with handles to serve as bags.

Stickers (3 varieties / ¥880 each, tax included)

◎ Specially Commissioned Work "Ryuko (Dragon and Tiger)"

Artist's Comment

The dragon and tiger symbolize harmony while representing opposition. Inspired by how clothing and goods are born from the opposing acts of "cutting" and "sewing," I expressed the tiger as Japanese scissors (wabami) and the dragon as thread and needle. I depicted the dragon and tiger as guardian deities that release inner emotions when worn, encouraging the courage to take that next step forward.

Reversible Jacket (2 sizes / ¥24,200, tax included) featuring "Ryuko" embroidery on the front and "Tairyo" all-over pattern on the reverse side.

Tote Bags (5 varieties / ¥3,520 each, tax included), Keychains (3 varieties / ¥1,320 each, tax included)

Goshuin Books (4 varieties / ¥3,740 each, tax included)

◎ Work "Hyotto Conro (Stove)"

Artist's Comment

Based on the theory that Hyottoko is a deity of the kamado (traditional stove), and being a motif with personal significance as my artist name, this work depicts Hyottoko dwelling in a gas stove as the modern equivalent of a kamado.

Small Household Appliance Illustration "Hyotto Conro"

Multi-purpose Pouches (3 varieties / ¥2,640 each, tax included)

Tenugui Hand Towels (1 variety / ¥2,640, tax included)

◎ Work "Furai Guerrilla Live"

Artist's Comment

This work depicts yokai (supernatural creatures) unconstrained by human rules, freely enjoying themselves at a music festival. I overlaid the carefree, unpredictable energy like summer weather with the spirit of enjoying life even in the chaotic atmosphere of modern society, expressed through the lens of Fujin (wind god) and Raijin (thunder god).

Reversible Haori Jackets (3 varieties / ¥17,600 each, tax included)

◎ Work "Taira no Kiyomori Does Not See Meerkats"

Artist's Comment

Things appear completely different depending on the viewer's state of mind. This work uses the trompe-l'oeil technique where gathered meerkats also resemble a skull, serving as an homage to Utagawa Hiroshige's "Taira no Kiyomori Viewing a Strange Apparition," expressing the anxiety and fear felt when harboring guilty thoughts.

Aloha Shirts (5 varieties / ¥9,020 each, tax included)

◎ Work "Mi no Hito (Fruit People)"

Artist's Comment

I depicted Japanese sweets, which disappear when eaten, as personified characters so they remain in your heart forever.

Mobile Shoulder Bags (3 varieties / ¥6,160 each, tax included)

Thoughts Behind the Collaboration (Wamonoya Kaya Product Planning Team)

All items feature unisex specifications designed to naturally blend into modern lifestyles regardless of traditional Japanese or Western wear. While based on Japanese culture and aesthetics, we valued creating something enjoyable in contemporary living. We wanted to restore the "satire and playfulness" that ukiyo-e originally possessed to modern daily life.

We hope that by wearing art, a bit of space and smiles will emerge in everyday life.
